I feel like we should have one or two so she has something to play with but part of me realizes she will be mostly sleeping in the beginning so it is pointless to buy anything now.
Did you buy any toys to have on hand when LO was ready to start playing?

We registered for a few basic toys and ended up getting a few other small toys as gifts (several Baby Einstein toys, rattles, plush stuffed animals, and teething toys). We've bought the bulk of our toys for LO after he was born, and have continued to buy things along the way. Beyond the basic toys, we also had an activity mat as well as an exersaucer (both registry items).

We bought a play mat (for tummy time) a rattle and a few soft toys before lo was born.

We bought a rattle and a few stuffed animals for decoration in the nursery.

I bought a few hanging toys and a couple of stuffed animals. Also started buying books, including some soft books for when she is younger.
We registered for some wooden alphabet blocks and the activity gym that we received. At 6 weeks old, so far she uses the activity gym and likes all the hanging toys. She also likes a rattle we got as a gift. I also wish I'd researched and registered for one of those interactive toys you put on the crib.

We got toys to hang from the car seat. Then people bought us some rattles.

We got toys at our shower. Some rings, rattles, teethers, toys that hang on her car seat and some pop beads.

We didn't buy it but someone bought plastic keys. In the first few weeks we also got a mobile.
LO really started taking to her carseat when we put toys on the handlebar.
A few can't hurt!

I bought Sophie and an elephant toy for the carseat. We also got a bunch of stuffed animals, some teething keys, and a few other things at our shower.

I had one of those lamaze animals, the giraffe, a Sophie chew toy that he wasn't interested in, some rings, a soft ball with a bell inside, soft stacking blocks, and a few other things. I couldn't help myself, they were all too cute.

I've bought several wooden toys and wooden rattles. Since we're doing Montessori at home I've also made several mobiles for different development stages that will be used for the first 4 months or so. I was also gifted toys to hang from her car seat, knitted toys, a sensory/tag fabric ball and she's got quite the book collection. We've also gotten her a few studded animals and wooden baby gym from Ikea. I don't think it's a bad idea to have a few little things on hand!

We were gifted some toys, and then later got hand me downs. I would wait to see if people bring you stuff after your LO is born. People love buying baby's things!

we only had what people had bought for us and given to us at the shower. mainly rattles and carseat toys.

I registered for some to give people cute non-clothing options--we're team green, and it seems to frustrate shoppers. 
The only thing I'm pretty sure I'll buy ahead of time myself (if we don't get it as a gift) is the activity gym.
