I'm overwhelmed in a good way by how many of my friends changed their profile pic to support marriage equality as the Supreme Court hears Prop 8 arguments!
Do you see many in your feed?

@Mrs Green Grass: oh no, I have no idea what you're talking about!

Pretty much everyone, although I already knew 99% of my FB friends support marriage equality. I haven't changed mine because i just don't think it'll do anything, it's sort of preaching to the choir.

i did. i have a lot of gay friends (and sadly, also know a lot of homophobes) and i figured changing my profile would be the least i could do to show my support.

This is the first time I've changed it for one of those types of things. A friend pointed out that its showing support, as opposed to creating awareness (which it doesn't).

I did not. I fully support marriage equality, but didn't feel that changing my picture would do much of anything. I had a few friends (though I only have about 100!) change theirs.
pomegranate / 3521 posts
I had a bunch of people on my NF change their picture. I havent changed my profile pic in ages and I am not very active aside from lurking/checking the NF for updates.

@mrs.someone - agreed. I changed mine to show my support and my stance on marriage equality, not necessarily because i expect to see change stemming from the action.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I've never actually changed mine either, but I share infographics from the Human Rights Coalition from time to time. I live in CA where Prop 8 somehow passed (defining marriage as between a man and a woman). I think a lot people (like myself) felt bad for not publicly showing support for gay rights then (I marched in parades and donated money, but didn't start any conversation that might change the minds of some of my other friends). So tons of my friends have changed their pic today.

I just did and I know my changing my pic doesn't result in a significant change but, at least, I am proudly showing my how I feel about it and proudly support my gay friends!
A lot of my friends changed their pics, too. Some didn't but they did share the pic on their wall.

@Mrs Green Grass: thanks for posting. I saw it in my feed and had no idea. I'm not a huge current events person!
@bluestriped bee: exactly my sentiments.
pomelo / 5628 posts
I think it actually does have a big effect. If a person you like or respect shows support for an issue you don't necessarily agree with, you open their mind a little bit. A lot of little bits can create a big change which is kind of what's been happening around the country over the past 5 years or so.

No, I did not. I appreciate the gesture but OMG QUIT IT! My feed is all red and it's hurting my eyes.
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
My feed is filled with red and pink equal signs... including my profile pic.
ETA: I changed mine to show my support for two of my friends who just got engaged and will be getting married later this year in New York. I feel that their marriage should be recognized federally and I wanted to show them that I care enough about the issue to support them publicly.

I didn't change mine, but I have a lot of friends who did. I did post this picture though.
pomelo / 5257 posts
I see a TON. Pretty much all my friends, which makes me happy. I desperately want to change mine, but I could lose my job if I publicly espouse any specific political beliefs and my boss is my Facebook friend. I was really conflicted this morning, and kind of feel like a bad person for playing it safe
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@MrsSCB: why would showing your support of marriage equality jeaporadize your job?
You can share the pic and choose to show that to everyone but your boss.

@regberadaisy: Hmmm, that's a good idea... And it's because I'm a journalist and we're supposed to be impartial, at least publicly, to the stories we cover. Facebook, Twitter, etc. are considered public. A coworker of mine was fired over something she tweeted so since then I've been a little paranoid!

Yep, I changed my pic as did a whole bunch of my FB friends. I never participate in the FB "repost if you (whatever)" things but this is different. It's about supporting marriage equality, not creating awareness.

No, but I support! CNN is reporting Chief Justice Roberts' first cousin is a lesbian hoping to marry her partner in CA. She is attending the oral arguments and thinks her cousin will make the right decision.

I didn't because I only access fb on the mobile app at home and can't figure out how to change it!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Haha I had no idea people were doing this until I saw this thread. I just checked my news feed and it is flooded with the equality picture. I am going to share it tonight, but can't do it from my phone right now. I would be very proud to live in a country where gay americans had equal marriage rights!
bananas / 9899 posts
Well I'm in Canada and so are most of my friends so I haven't seen any changed pictures! We've had same sex marriage for a while now though.
pomelo / 5628 posts
@dagret: it took me ages even on my ck outer. I don't know why it's so hard!
pomelo / 5628 posts
@zippylef: my husband said to me today, "why is the supreme. Piet wasting their time on this?" Meaning it shouldn't be an issue in the first place. Great pic.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
I didn't. I am very conservative but actually support marriage equality. Gay people being able to marry doesn't hurt anyone, and there are a lot of other "challenges" to the "traditional family" that I think it makes sense to either allow it, or just take the government out of marriage. I try to keep my politics off of FB though as I have a lot of opposing views and want to maintain respect... and getting in a squabble with someone I care about just makes me heated and sometimes lose respect for them so I try to avoid it!! I think a lot of people would be surprised that I support it though! But I'm still very conservative on most other issues. To me there's no black and white "liberal" and "conservative" everyone should think for themselves on the issues!
pineapple / 12802 posts
@pui: same. I noticed some changes and kinda wondered what the heck was going on. Still haven't changed mine because we already have gay marriage and I post enough evidence of my support anyway.
honeydew / 7586 posts
I haven't yet but everyone knows I am a huge supporter of marriage equality and lobbied pretty strongly to have gay marriage legalized in Maryland (which it is! Yay!). I plan to change it when I have access to my computer to show my continued support.

@KJfromNJ: "To me there's no black and white 'liberal' and 'conservative' everyone should think for themselves on the issues!"
Well said!
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@pui: Thanks! and I like when people bring up Canada having had gay marriage for a while now. Like... CANADA HASN'T BLOWN UP. THEY'RE OK. I think it's just a losing argument at this point and it really should be allowed so we can move on as a country with equal rights!
grapefruit / 4703 posts
I didn't because I'm a rebel but I did share this picture from the POTUS' FB page. My whole news feed is covered in equality stuff.
Side note - I read somewhere today that in public opinion polls during the time that the Supreme Court was ruling on legalizing interracial marriage, only 20% of Americans supported it (!!). Compare that to the roughly 50% who support same sex marriage right now. I feel fortunate to live in a state where same sex marriage has been legal for almost 8 years, but hopefully the rest of the country (and world!) will follow suit soon.
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@KJfromNJ: LOL @ Canada hasn't blown up. I can't even participate in the debate because the arguments against marriage equality make me so angry I can't control myself. Once you remove the bible (not allowed in the supreme court), you're left with pure emotion. And that also doesn't belong in the supreme court. Lucky for me, I a) don't know anyone against it and b) live in a state where it's already legal, so there really isn't anyone to argue with.
