I think 4th grade you focus on your state's history, so it makes sense that in CA you'd talk about the missions
I know that in 4th grade we did a big Utah history thing, where we talked about fur trappers and rendezvous, and had a big "rendezvous" at our school where you had to bring homemade things and then trade and barter with other kids.

Instead of missions we actually focused on Sutter's Fort and my class got to spend the night there dressed as pioneers! We spent the year taking on the identity of a real member of the Donner Party and had this elaborate thing in the classroom, like we received shells as incentives that we could use as currency during our Fort stay.

We didn't do that growing up in Florida, but DH grew up in Northern California and did. He chose Mission Santa Barbara too and just told me that he used the mission he made as a garage for his GI Joes.

Yes, we built missions out of "adobe". Straw, sand, mud, and water. It was messy and we all loved it. California girl here.

Yep, it's a CA thing. In most states, you do state history in 4th grade. My husband did a full Boston tea party renactment!

@mediagirl: no, it's a school thing. California has 40 (?) missions that were founded by the Spanish in the 18th century (?), so we study all the missions as part of CA history. It's pretty fun. The town I grew up in had a mission, but it's mostly gone now.
