In the beginning, when I was reading about Cord Blood Banking, I was all for it, but now I am having doubts, especially for the financial part of it.

What are your thoughts on Cord Blood Banking?

We won't. Everything I've read suggests that the odds that your child will get a disease that will actually be treatable by their own cord blood/stem cells are so long that it's not worth it to me to take the financial hit for years and years. I think the better option would be if more people donated their cord blood, so it is available to those it might help more frequently. I'm going to look into if that is possible at our hospital.

we banked our son's cord blood and plan to do the same with our 2nd baby.

We won't be banking the cord blood, but would donate it if the hospital I'm delivering at accepts donations.

thank you everyone for your posts! was also curious to see how common it is.

When we have a LO we don't plan on banking the cord blood either.

No, we did not. My doctor said that it is very rare that the cord blood is ever used and to not spend the money.

Here's some info about donating: http://marrow.org/Get_Involved/Donate_Cord_Blood/Cord_Blood_is_Changing_Lives/Cord_Blood_Is_Changing_Lives_Today.aspx
I think donating is a great idea.

We plan on doing it. In my head I can't get past the what ifs in a hopefully, knock on wood scenario down the road.

It appears that it is well over $1000. You pay the storage facility a fee every year as well, around 100/year.

I would love to donate but just checked:

Unfortunately my hospital doesn't participate in donations. I almost want to change hospitals now. That is unfortunate.

We are going to bank both blood and tissue. Yes it's expensive, and it's a "luxury", but we figure if we can afford it, then why wouldn't we do it--JUST in case.

After research, we decided not bank. I tried to donate, but our hospital doesn't participate in the donation program.

We did delayed clamping, and therefore didn't bank. We wouldn't have banked, though, even if we hadn't delayed clamping.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
along the same lines as hilsy - we're considering it and looking into detailed information right now.

We are not. We are donating. I was told that typically the child can't use their own, it's more likely to match parent or sibling. That, and the woman from Viacord who came to my childbirth class to talk about it was rude and obnoxious, basically saying we were bad parents for not thinking of saving our child's life.

I looked into it and did extensive research and from what I found out we will not be banking, and unfortunately we will not be able to donate either as our hosptial/state does not do that.

For some diseases that are hereditary, it can make a difference otherwise there isn't enough (scientific) proof that it is worthwhile. Again, I'm no expert but this is what one of my husband's siblings, who is a MD/PHD researcher at Stanford, was told by a faculty member at Stanford who studies stuff like this.

We're still researching. At my first prenatal appointment they gave me this stack of papers to fill out and sign, and I'm usually so bad and just speed through and sign everything, but I happened to be paying attention and one of them was an agreement to have the cord blood banking and pay for any and all associated costs. That kind of turned me off because here I am 5 and a half weeks pregnant and nervous as anything and they want to (sort of) trick me into agreeing to pay an undisclosed amount of money without any discussion? I didn't sign - it stated you can still decide to do it later - so I suspect we'll talk about it again when we have our birth plan appointment.
Does anyone know if some insurance plans cover this? I obviously have to call and check but I could have sworn I saw something about it in my plan literature.

Do some research before you pay to bank cord blood. I read somewhere recently, that often even if there is a use for the cord blood that there often isn't enough to be useful in the child. Unfortunately, I also can't rememeber where I read that.

We have decided to not to bank it for ourselves and at first had planned on donating instead. Then I did extensive research on delayed cord cutting--which I am very keen to do if possible--and learned that donating is not possible with the delayed clamping--which would be be first preference.

We banked both of our kid's cord blood. No other reason than "juuuuuust in case".

Bumping an old thread. Just wondering of those of you who 'were considering it' ended up doing it or not.
squash / 13764 posts
@bluestriped bee: yup we did end up doing it! We're happy with our decision.

I wish I had known you could donate it. We had no idea that was an option and couldn't afford to bank it. We opted for a delayed cord clamping which I later found out they forgot to do which really frustrates me.
watermelon / 14206 posts
We delay clamping, but even if it wasn't delayed, we'd donate it or just let it go. It's not worth the cost to me.
honeydew / 7687 posts
We delayed cord clamping so he got all that special blood! If for some reason they hadn't been able to delay, we would've donated.
persimmon / 1343 posts
Nope, too pricey and the people from the cord blood banks turned us of being very pushy and calling all the time. We considered donating it since our hospital had that option, but we just delayed clamping instead, which was not as long of a delay as it could have been because I had a csection and they didn't want me to be just hanging open very long

I really wanted to, and I would have if it was just a one-time fee. I went to one of the free classes and confirmed that the annual storage fee was for the lifetime of your child (until if/when they needed it!) So for things like cancer, if you estimated they might get at age 55, you/LO would be paying that annual fee for 55 years! And it wasn't a small annual fee. Alas, I just have to hope 1) she'll never need it, and 2) future science will have better solutions.

I didn't do too much research as once i found out the cost i lost interest. But i was initially interested in banking. I would have donated but am pretty sure I can't in my province, although i heard that might be changing in the future.

We donated. If your child has a condition that necessitates cot blood, generally they are unsuitable for donating to themselves. I figured we'd make best use of it by donating.
nectarine / 2220 posts
We wanted to delay clamping so never really discussed donation or banking. But then something happened, and the dr needed to take LO quickly so it ended up being cut. I assume it just went to waste since there was no backup plan for it discussed
bananas / 9118 posts
We wanted to donate, but by the time we learned more about it, it was way too late (I think like 32 weeks?) we would have had to get the ball rolling much sooner. This time I'll start working on the donation stuff much earlier.
We did delayed clamping instead since we couldn't donate, but ended up with jaundice, which can be a negative effect of delayed clamping- whether that contributed to the jaundice or not, we will not be delaying clamping next time.
