I gave up coffee so far but I've been wanting some so bad! I'm not sure if I want to give in and have some or hold off.
Did you drink coffee during pregnancy? If so, how much and how often?

@Bao: Nope because I don't like it. I was drinking iced coffee a couple times a week before I found out, but I stopped that.
I'm dying for a coke though.. I usually make DH order one if we go out and have some sips of that!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
No coffee for me because I didn't drink it before.
I do have a coke about once a week though. Mmmm

Not during the first trimester because the smell of it made me sick. I did have a can of coke a couple days a week, though...it helped with the nausea and headaches. It was one of the few aversions I had that went away at the start of the second trimester, so I had a mug (home-brewed) every day.

Nope. I was/am one of those crazy ones. Oh the smell totally made me sick first tri too!
I only took up decaf after a 2.5 month sleep regression!
coconut / 8279 posts
I had a tall Starbucks, half caf - just about every morning.
I was more worried about the effects of caffeine when I was nursing, but continued my morning half caf - I went back to work at 7 weeks and was exhausted!
grapefruit / 4923 posts
i drank decaf pre-pregnancy, and continued to drink about 1 cup per day during pregnancy (after the nausea went away at around 2 months).
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Yup. I had one cup at home every day after the first trimester. I had weaned myself off of it while ttc so I wouldn't get withdrawal headaches, which was good bc it smelled AWFUL in the first trimester! After the ms went away I'd have my one cup a day, then no other caffeine (besides chocolate!)

I'm not a huge coffee drinker but I had two iced Vietnamese coffees during my second pregnancy.
bananas / 9357 posts
It made me sick during the first tri but after that I enjoyed a cup every morning.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
No, but only because I don't like it. I drank coke daily instead with my doctor's permission.
eggplant / 11824 posts
Not during the first trimester because even the thought of coffee made my stomach roll, but after that I had coffee or a latte whenever I felt like one; which was sometimes once a week, and sometimes once a day.
eggplant / 11287 posts
Oh yes. Lots of coffee. One 16 oz iced latte or americano a day. Rare occasions i will have 2 in a day. And diet coke here and there (2 a month?).
I love coffee!!!!

With my first, after the first trimester I'd indulge in a half-caf every now and then. But that was coming off NOT being a coffee drinker.
With my second, coming off of being a WOHM to an active toddler, I was going from drinking like 4 cups a day to NOTHING. ahhhhhh!! So I drank about a cup a day. Even that was painful. I chose mornings so my afternoons were really really hard for a while.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
I need my morning cup, but I had no problem switching to decaf. Having my coffee is more a psychological cue that the day has started than a caffeine thing for me, though.
ETA: the one crummy thing about decaf is that there's so little choice in varietals and roasts. I love it when places don't have any decaf brewed and have to make me an Americano instead...yesterday I got super lucky and the S'bux I was at used the clover brewer AND gave me a choice of roasts! It felt like winning the lottery, haha.

I didn't feel comfortable having a coffee every morning and then possibly a pop with lunch. So I switched to decaf so I don't have to worry about drinking too much caffeine. I just love the taste of coffee!!
grapefruit / 4800 posts
Not with my first except for a few sips here and there.
With my second everything was gross in the first trimester but since mid second trimester I've been having maybe a quarter-half cup several days a week. It might not even be that much I put just a bit in and then fill my cup up half way with milk. I get jittery though if I have any more so even with that little I don't usually finish the cup. I don't drink any soda though I do have chocolate so I get a bit of caffeine elsewhere.

I wasn't pregnant for long so I'm not sure if I would have continued, but I wanted sweet tea ALL the time when I was KU. So while I didn't have coffee (not a fan), I had caffeine, even though I swore I wouldn't!

I switched to decafe last pregnancy and continued to while nursing and into TTC #2. I'm not sure I'll ever go back to full caffeine even after I'm done nursing #2. Now if I could only give up sugar...
grapefruit / 4862 posts
I switched to decaf when we started trying. I'm not really effected by caffeine though (fast caffeine metabolizer) so it's no different for me. I am ok with the occasional caffeine when out though- like I had an affogado (espresso shot over gelato) when I was in NYC after dinner last April. I also have no issue having coffee flavor things- not sure if those have caffeine in them though!
nectarine / 2522 posts
Yep. Usually 1 a day... That's a cut down from pre-pregnancy and I'd rather have a small bit of caffeine everyday than have to take painkillers due to withdrawal headaches!!! Geeez I sound like an addict!
coconut / 8475 posts
@Bao: I didn't during the first trimester (just by preference and honestly, I probably couldn't stomach it anyways)
I did during the 2nd and 2rd. I think she said my limit was 2/day but honestly, even before pregnancy, I never had more than a cup a day anyways.
*when I say coffee, I really mean either a coffee or a soda. I chose either/or for the day.
nectarine / 2765 posts
I'm not a huge coffee drinker to begin with...the first couple months the thought of coffee alone made me dry heave, since then I'll have a cup here & there when I'm really in the mood for it. I just try to be conscious of how much caffeine I drink.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Nope. To be honest, I wasn't into coffee until after I had my lo. Now I understand the addiction. I LOVE soda though (Diet Coke is my faaaavorite). It was my coffee but I didn't drink even one can during my pregnancy.
eggplant / 11408 posts
Sometimes...usually to get rid of a headache. If I know I will want more than one cup, I will usually do half caff.
pomelo / 5469 posts
The first tri I had none, but by the 2nd I was drinking 1 or occasionally 2 cups a day.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I didn't, but this is on of those things I might do differently next time around. I only drink a cup a day and after going back to it, I can't imagine giving it up again!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Yes, whenever the urge struck! I never have more than one coffee per day, pregnant or not, and I don't have it everyday so I just continued my normal routine. I also had a Coke nearly every single day and never worried about it. I never actually tracked my caffeine intake but am sure I was in the safe range 99% of the time.
I figure that by having some caffeine every day whilst pregnant, my LO would be used to it, so I wouldn't have to cut it out whilst BF'ing. Sure enough, my coffees and cokes had zero impact on my BF'ing LO and I could drink them without having to worry about my LO not settling afterwards! Coffee = happy mama!
persimmon / 1379 posts
Oh yes I did.
At first the thought of coffee had me feeling super sick, but as soon as I got over that I was right back on the coffee train!
One cup a day!
pear / 1799 posts
I weaned off while we were TTC. Since becoming pregnant, I've had two cups of 1/2 almond milk ... 1/2 coffee. It's good, but I'm not craving it other than those two times.
pomegranate / 3580 posts
I haven't had any the first trimester, but I have had two decaf lattes and a few cups of decaf coffee. I know it's safe in moderation, but I'm paranoid plus if I don't drink a lot of water I get so dehydrated pretty quickly.
hostess / eggplant / 11068 posts
Coffee was the one thing I refused to give up. I can't function otherwise. My OB (for DD) and my midwife (for #2) both said that it was okay. I just limit myself to one morning mug a day. Every day.
clementine / 957 posts
I did and do drink coffee! I have been drinking coffee for so many years. I have one a day. If I know I'm having a deit coke later in the day, I'll try to skip it but I usually stick with lemonade or just water for the rest of the day.
I can't give it up! My OB said I'm fine with a cup of joe and a soda a day but I choose one or the other.
nectarine / 2274 posts
I gave it up during my pregnancy, but I was never a crazy coffee drinker. I just really wanted coffee ice cream. I ate so many pints after having LO.
honeydew / 7917 posts
I don't drink coffee very often and stuck with drinking an occasional decaf with my first pregnancy. I've had even less coffee with this pregnancy, but I'm not as strict and will have a full caffeinated cup. Just learned how to use my french press this week and will most likely drink a cup or two a week.
honeydew / 7909 posts
I didn't drink coffee before but I was obsessed with iced tea which I haven't had since I got my bfp. If I want a sip of soda, I have some of DH's.... otherwise, no caffeine for me.
