I have a childhood friend named friend named Catherine who experimented with several spellings of Katie in elementary and junior high. Katie, Katey, Katee, Catie, Catey, Cati...she settled on Katie in high school!

Nooooo. And I hate when people mess with it. My SIL referred to me as Jaki in a text the other day. I was like, "you still don't know how my name is spelled??"
But people misspell it all.the.time. I don't know why you would ever attempt to guess a unique name spelling for someone!

@autumnlove: That's actually my name (her chosen nickname) and people spell it so wrong all the time - no need for me to get unique! I get Katy most often - no idea why people don't choose the most common spelling as a default

Nah I've always just spelled it normally.
I had a friend named Liliane in high school who now goes by "Lylli", but she's been going by that so long now that it seems normal.

Absolutely not. My name is my name, don't mess with it.
A girl in High School changed her name (Carley) to Carli.

LOL a friend of mine (Kathryn/Kate) started spelling her name Cayte in 7th grade, so of course I had to add a Y to my name. It didn't last long, maybe a few months. I had forgotten about that... too funny!

There just aren't any great ways to mess with my name...
I have one friend who adds an IE to the end instead of the A that is supposed to be there. She is the ONLY person allowed to do that. lol

Ugh, YES. It lasted for a long time (through high school and college). I decided to go by "Anee" instead of "Annie" (#soedgy). I went back to the normal spelling once I started working, but the email address I use is still the weird spelling, along with my maiden name.
It's been 5+ years since I got married... guess I should change my email address soon.

Nope. I have a common name already spelled weird. It is annoying.

My name is Carol and at one point in jr. high I thought it was really boring and wanted to see if I could get people to call me Cece. But that didn't really fly
My group of friends now is big into nicknames and one of them is Colombian and she started calling me Carola years ago because that's the spanish version of my name to her, and now a bunch of our friends will call me that too.

Not creative spelling, but I started going by Jay my senior year of hs and freshman year in college. Because I was sick of my korean first name

Yes! In middle school I changed the spelling of my name, then went back to normal in high school. It was a funny phase.

I didn't, but my parents made a creative spelling? I spell Kate as Kaite (shorted it to Kait for awhile). I had a teacher tell me I was spelling it incorrectly!

I switched what I went by several times (Beth with family, tried Michelle (middle name), then Elizabeth, then Lizzie, settled on Liz), but only messed with spelling once, and not to be edgy or anything. When I was going by Lizzie I started with a "y" at the end, then found out I had a great, great aunt named that who spelled it with an "or." (ETA- "ie!" Wtf autocorrect?) So I did it for family reasons.
Also, off-topic but my mom HATED when I switched to Lizzie because she said people would think I was a lesbian.

haha i inexplicably decided to spell my name lysa instead of lisa for a short period of time but ONLY at summer camp. why? i have no idea. but i have a camp friend i keep in touch with who still calls me lysa... we laugh about it though.

No, but there aren't a lot of things I could do with "Erin." My mom initially considered spelling it "Eryn," but I'm glad she didn't.

@HabesBabe: hahaha, another friend of mine ANN decided it was too boring and she tacked on an E for a few years! Anne!

@Torchwood: LOL @ Lizzor
I think it's funny that this is so common!

@Mrs. J: interesting!
I'm Kaitlin and when my mom calls me Kait it's always spelled the way I just wrote it but when My husband does it he insists on spelling it Kate which drives me insane. I also went by Kaiti for a while....also how my mom would spell it as it makes sense with my whole name. I like it spelled that way. I guess I just figured that since my mom named me, the right way to spell things is how she would do it lol

@Mrs. Sunshine: exactly! I spell it like you, but with a "y" instead of the second "I". I feel like you can't tell someone how to spell his/her name!

My nickname from my family is Neak and everyone always spells it differently. My official spelling ( ) is NEAK, but NEEK and NIK come up in texts a lot.
Also my full first name gets some interesting spellings from those just taking a stab at it.

My name is Ellen after a relative and I've always hated it. Haaaated it.
Turns out my Dad wasn't a huge fan either because he always called me Ellie and by the time I was 9 or 10 I pretty much demanded that everyone call me by my nickname. Family calls me Elle, friends and acquaintances Ellie. I much prefer it. In HS I experimented with spelling - Elly, Elleigh, Elli, but I've always been Ellie so that's just feels more me.

@autumnlove: Thank you! It feels much more me than my given name and I've always been a bit of a daddy's girl so I love that he gave me the nickname.
bananas / 9227 posts
Yes, kind of. Some close friends have shortened by already short name and during school, started to write it in messages and cards, etc. But it's not a name I'd previously used for myself, especially not in writing, so the spelling was open to interpretation. It was only during collage that I'd chosen a spelling that I liked: Rae. Although I still occasionally get Ray, Rey, or even Rhe.

Nope, I've always just used my normal spelling. I went to school with a Jaime who switched her name to Jayme...still goes by it today.

My name is already spelled weird. People often ask, "Is that your REAL name?" ... Thanks mom & dad!
