I'm scheduled for the NT scan. My doctor said they only do the MaterniT21 if you get back bad results from NT scan. For those that got the MaterniT21 test, did you get the NT scan as well?

I think my practice offers maternity 21 to anyone over 35.

I only got the NT scan. I think most who get the 21 test either have a) family history or b) "advanced maternal age". I'm neither.
NT scan came back normal.

@winniebee: I was hoping since I'm 35 I could just get the materniT21 but he said we have to do the NT scan first. And only if the NT scan is irregular do we move on to MaterniT21.

My office only does them if you are over 35 or if there are risks/abnormalities. I begged to have it but they wouldn't let me.

I chose to do a MaterniT21 even though I am under 35 and very low risk. As it came back totally clear, we skipped the NT and are going to just do the Quad screen at 17 weeks.

I had both. I insisted on doing the MaterniT21 as early as possible (10 weeks) and did the NT scan at 12. They weren't thrilled with me but I didn't care. As it turned out I was very happy I had the blood work done first as DS had a questionable neck thickness measurement. But since we already had the blood work back we knew there was pretty much zero chance there was anything to worry about.

@bushelandapeck: @littlek: This seems so strange, it's a blood test. If you want it and will pay for it if insurance doesn't cover it, why do they care if you get it or not? Maybe you can just go to a local lab and have it drawn?
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@kiddosc: I think the thing is insurance won't pay for it without the NT scan. I didn't push my OB, I just thought it was weird.

@littlek: My blood tests and NT scan were normal, and I still elected to have an amnio. I understand Docs are following protocol, but a patient still has control (especially when are willing to pay for services that may not be covered by insurance)>

@littlek: Oh, well insurance coverage is a separate issue. If you were willing to pay for the test, then I don't think they can really tell you no.

My practice referred me to do the Harmony test, which is basically the same thing. The test came back with everything looking normal.
My practice also had me do the NT scan at 12 weeks, because the maternal blood tests don't necessarily show any anatomical issues.

I did not get either. Here that blood test is not covered by OHIP (at least not for me, I'm only 27) and costs $900, so we didn't do it.

@kiddosc: I was willing to pay for it out of pocket but it's the policy of my office I guess. I really only wanted it because we had some abnormalities when I was pregnant with DS and had the test. I found it very reassuring.
apricot / 435 posts
@littlek: Yes! Harmony at 10 weeks (just because that's the earliest you can do it, so we decided to do it then) and NT at 12.

@Ms.Pumpkin: awww, so jealous, I was hoping my doctor would let me get the MaterniT21 at 10 weeks too. Oh well, I'll wait for the NT scan. I'm very superstitious so I'll keep the order my OB gave me the other day.

My practice did both the MaterniT21 and NT scan. I think they do it on all patients unless you deny it. I was low risk, under 35 and on my second low risk pregnancy. And my insurance paid for both tests.

I just had the materniT21 test done last Tuesday...still awaiting the results. This is my 3rd pregnancy, but it's the first time I've needed this test. I had the NT done, which came back low risk for any abnormalities, but my anatomy scan showed a choroid plexus cyst. After a followup Level 2 u/s a week later, which showed the cyst again, I was given the options of an amnio or this blood test, if I felt it was necessary. We obviously opted for the non-invasive bloodtest and are anxiously awaiting the results. We are optimistic bc the doctor did not seem concerned at all, and honestly didn't push us to perform either followup test, which I found to be very reassuring. I feel like if she was concerned, she would have told me to get the blood test, not just tell me about it and let me choose. Idk. Either way, it's stressful, and we're hoping for the best.

@bunnylovesbear: DS had that cyst, and while it was terrifying to hear the correlations with trisomy 18, the actual risk when explained was very reassuring. One of DH's preceptors equated it to this: heartburn is common in pregnant women, but having heartburn isn't a good indicator that you are pregnant.
Wall me if you have any questions, rants or anything. We were anxious about it until LO came out, and were so relieved when everything was A-OK.

I had both. Don't remember exactly why but something having to do with being in a higher risk group for downs. I am also under 35.

I had both. When I went in to do the NT scan, they asked if I wanted the M21 as well (I had a previous m/c due to a chromosomal abnormality). They did the blood draw on the same day and I got the results a weeks later.
My OB office doesn't even offer the NT scan. I had to ask to be referred to MFM to have it done. While I was there, the doctors/genetic counselor asked if I wanted the M21 test. They couldn't believe that my OB office hadn't told me my options regarding testing (ugh. don't even get me started).

@knittylady: thanks for the reassurance. We are feeling pretty optimistic about the whole thing because, like you said, couples with our low risk results in the early testing, it's very unlikely that there's anything wrong. When my nurse originally called with the results, she said something along the lines of, "you may have had something like this in one of your previous pregnancies..." I told her I hadn't, but I think she was trying to let me know how common it is and how uncommon the link to trisomy is. It's just troublesome bc a diagnosis of trisomy is a dire one, you know? Siiiigh. Hoping the long weekend doesn't delay my results. Tuesday will be one week, and I have a follow-up ultrasound that afternoon.

Maternit21 didn't exist for my pregnancy, but we did NT and when I popped out of the algorithm as high risk, we did cvs.
apricot / 294 posts
I did the Materniti21 test at around 11 weeks and, even though my insurance didnt cover the test, they then said there was no need for the NT scan.
persimmon / 1233 posts
@bunnylovesbear: just for some extra reassurance, DS had several choroid plexus cysts plus another soft marker for the trisomies (a spot on his heart). We had the M21 test and it turned out to be nothing. They said they wouldn't even suggest the blood test if it was just the cysts, they were just concerned with the combination of two markers. So odds are in your favor!

@hummusgirl: Thanks for sharing your story. Hearing lots of success stories definitely makes the wait a little easier.

I only had NT - my MWs said they would order the M21 if (1) I wanted it, or automatically if (2) my NT results were questionable, or (3) I was over 35. I'll probably get it next time.

Results are in - all is well here!! I feel like a HUGE weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and I can breathe again.

@littlek: Just saw this now.....had both. We weren't high risk, but my mom had a chromosomal abnormality with one of her pregnancies so we wanted to do it just in case. We did NT after the MaterniT21 just as a precaution-the genetic counselor we saw said they look for slightly different things. I live in California, and we get pretty subsidized prenatal testing, so we figured it couldn't hurt. I hadn't heard from many who'd done MaterniT21, so feel free to let me know if you have questions. We were very lucky to have both tests come back totally low-risk.
