Charlie's legal name is... Charlie! Not Charles...
I've noticed that more and more people are using nicknames as their kid's real name. Jack instead of John, Liz instead of Elizabeth, etc.
Did you give your LO a nickname as their real name?

So far our soon to be born daughter has been named Abby by her dad. Took me a bit to get used to it
(I think I just had a hard time telling people that was going to be her name, I guess I care too much what others think - even though I shouldnt!)
but I am pretty used to it now and even call her that myself :).

We're naming our daughter Billie. It's not even a nickname for a girl's name, but we love it.

I was born with a nickname, Jessie, and let me just say I hope people get more used to it. I have been announced at 2 college graduations as 'Jessica" because people just assume it is my legal name. I also got detention in high school for correction an English teacher for "sassing back" when I corrected her. It's something I have hated my entire life, I told my husband we are avoiding this for our future children. (sorry to be such a Debbie Downer about it)

@MRSJAZZ, very cool. I love Billie Holiday, I'm assuming that's your inspiration?!

@mrsjazz: my friend just named her newborn billie
my name is actually my mom's nickname. people always ask if it's "short for something"... nope!

@mrsjazz: too cute. I lived with a girl named Billie in college. It fit her perfectly. We named our daughter Davie after my father David.

@Clementine: Yes, after Billie Holiday. We were deciding between Ella and Billie, but Ella didn't flow with her middle name (Evelyn, a family name).
@NYCaliMama @Thehistoryofus: Yay! More Billie's! We like that it's not too popular, but it is nice to hear of others. I recently learned that Rebecca Gayheart and her husband "McSteamy" from Grey's named their daughter Billie.
@Thehistoryofus: I love Davie. It's nice that it's a family name and I just love hearing common boy names used for girls.

I'm a big proponent for this-- if you want him to be called Charlie, name him Charlie!! haha. This is because my parents named me Christina but called me Tina from the day I was born. This caused tons of confusion... when I moved to a new town in 3rd grade and told people to call me Tina, I got teased mercilessly ("Tina Turner!") so I started going by Christina instead. When I got to college, I got really sick of my family and lifelong friends calling me Tina and only school people calling me Christina. So I switched over to Tina and have been using it since then. When graduation time hit people found out my full name was Christina and some people actually got angry! "How come you never told me your real name is Christina?" Um... is it really that important???
So yeah, I go by Tina now. Even though I hate the name. Stripper/prostitute/mistress name. But oh well.
That being said... we decided to name our son Robert Jr. So we call him RJ, Junior, Rob Jr... I'm sure when he gets to school he'll go by Rob. So I've passed on the tradition of the confusing name.
At least his initial will still be R.... I get confused with monogramming, am I a "C" or "T"?

Oh boy! My name is Gigi. It isn't short for anything either and it took quite a while for me to love it. Dr. Gigi doesn't sound very comforting does it? haha

@mrbee: every movie, tv show, book, etc... now you will start noticing Tinas everywhere. And they all hoes. I swear every fictional character named Tina is just an unsavory woman. I'm glad Tina Fey exists. But even her character is named Liz. That just seems cool and intelligent.
Btw did you know I loved the name Charlie, because of the way it sounds with our last name??

@tina: I've always had a positive take on the name Tina. Tina Fey, Tina Turner, those are the only Tinas that I know. If I ever am hanging out with strippers or prostitutes though, I'll ask them if they know any Tinas.
Ah that's funny about Charlie. I liked the name based on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has a nice ring to it too.

@Tina @Mrbee perhaps Tina and I could start a stripper dance troupe? People always ask me if this is my real name haha It also sounds like a stripper name. Do we have anyone named Bambi here?

@ecogirl: Wait if your name is Gigi, how are you fluent in Japanese!
Did you grow up there, or study the language later?
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
No, we are giving LO a full name that can be shortened to a nickname.

@mrbee My husband is Japanese and his parents are not my biggest fan so I learned the language to get closer to them It didn't work but it didn't hurt either haha

I would like to name our child a name you can't create a nickname out of but my husband has other ideas if we have a boy. We won't name him or her a nickname but it will be a name you can't shorten... Hopefully.

@ecogirl: @mrbee: I'm totally down for a stripper dance troupe. A momma stripper dance troupe. Ew. We totally have to find a Bambi... or maybe a Crystal or a Destiny.

@mrbee I went to the NY Language School and they are really great. I took courses there for a year and then we went and lived in Japan for 2 months. I asked everyone to only speak Japanese to me but I think being immersed in it really worked well in making me fluent. We also speak Japanese in our home regularly. It is a difficult language to learn but I find it very beautiful too. I'm taking a french course there now and it is wonderful!
@tina Haha how do we market that one?
