absolutely! if i wanted anything other than the necessities (school uniform, books and basic basic food) i was expected to pay for it myself.

at 15 - 16 i worked weekends on checkouts at the local supermarket (i think i got $5.45 NZ an hour!)

then from 16 til when i left for college i worked drive thru at BKs! i think by then i was old enough to be upgraded to NZ$11.50 an hour. buy i felt rich!! hehe. i worked nights (every weeknight, and some saturdays!) with the college kids. i don't know how i made it through high school on so little sleep!

our kids will absolutely work. i want them to understand the work that's behind money. even if it's just something on the weekends so it doesn't get in the way of school.

I did! We had to work if we wanted a car. My parents bought the cr, but we had to maintain it. I started work at 14 though and my stepdad's call center. When I was 16 I got a job as a hostess at Mellow Mushroom.

Babysitter! I babysat a lot!! I'll be ok with my kids getting jobs as long as it doesn't interfere with school.

I did. I started working at 14. My mom told me if I wanted a car I had to have a job because she wasn't going to pay for my gas.

My parents also said no to a job while I was in school, although I did spend a lot of time volunteering. The summer after graduation I finally got a job in a doctor's office.

Yes I worked at Chuck E. Cheese's when I was 16 in addition to babysitting.

Yup! I bussed tables at a local ski resort, worked as a math tutor in my hs, worked concessions during the 2002 winter olympics, and shelved books at the public library. I obviously didn't do them all at the same time. I kept working at the library during my college breaks.
