A friend had a major chicken aversion during her first trimester (especially while cooking it), and a bunch of her friends reported the same. I was wondering how widespread this was!

Yes! Grilled and boiled made me gag. I think I had a bite of fried chicken and it was ok!

Yes! The mere thought of it made me ill (I won't elaborate regarding the effect that the smell had on me). Second on my personal aversion list was lettuce. Those were some rough days!

Just raw chicken. And the smell of it cooking really grossed me out too (but most cooking smells were hard for me in the first tri). But once it was fully cooked I had no issue eating it.

@MamaMoose: I'm with MamaMoose, raw chicken was fowl. (Hahahaha!)
But I was averse to just about everything under the sun, frankly.

Yes!! I could only manage red meats. I'd still take red meats over white.

i'm currently in my first trimester, and nope! i've actually been craving chick-fil-a like crazy.

Yep! I didn't eat chicken again until around 16 weeks. Even the smell chicken bouillon made me sick.

Yep! Most animal proteins made me gag. It also happened to me after my HCG trigger shots.
grape / 99 posts
Yes! The smell and thought would gag me. I don't think I ate much chicken throughout pregnancy, I had such strong cravings for beef.
apricot / 359 posts
Yes! In first tri right now and can't stand chicken. And I love chicken
honeydew / 7235 posts
No! i ate a lot of chicken in the first tri actually.
Salmon (gag) and avocados were another story.
I can eat avocados again (one of my favorite foods, so weird that I couldn't stomach them), but not salmon.

Yep! So nasty.... even the thought of it made me want to hurl~

I had a major aversion to all meat...I didn't cook or eat meat during my entire first trimester and rarely ate or cooked meat through my entire pregnancy - the only exception was I ate bacon almost every day
I also could not stand eggs while I was pregnant
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Haha how crazy that this happens to be so common! @sandy: Same here. All meat gave me the heebie jeebies.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@highwire: did you have a baby girl?
My theory is meat aversion = girl. This is based on a very small sample of people i know who had boys and loved meat during their pregnancy and those who couldn't stand it and had girls.

Yes. Gross. DH usually makes this really delicious chicken drumstick recipe, and I've had to turn it down after the last time, with the skin and the fat and the UGH GROSS. I feel really bad, I haven't told him yet that I can't stand chicken right now.
And is it weird that I don't really like looking at eggs right out of the shell? They remind me of the first ultrasound where I saw the yolk sac and everything. I still like eggs and eating them, etc. But looking at them raw makes me think of what they are -- unfertilized eggs -- and just makes me want to cry. (Sorry)

@sandy: It's funny you say that, my friend wanted to eat red meat all the time when she was pregnant with her son, and she's not really a big meat eater. I don't know how her eating habits changed when she was pregnant with their daughter, but she did say she had an urge to become a lot more feminine -- take the spacers out of her ears, wear more feminine clothing, grow her hair out longer, etc. -- when she was pregnant with her.
I will say that we are not far enough along to know the gender, but normally, I love the hell out of burgers, and the idea of eating a burger just does not appeal to me at all. I'm not even averse to it, I just... don't want it.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@sandy: I'll find out on Tuesday for sure. But the doctor was 80% sure it was a girl at our last ultrasound.

Interesting, @sandy and @ladyfingers... I'm a huge, huge meat eater. A salad is not a meal to me... unless its laden with chicken, of course. I prefer red meat, but do love chicken. This hasn't changed at all since becoming pregnant. In fact, I think I've actually wanted meat more. I've had lots of aversions so far (number one being pizza.. blech!) but a hamburger always sounds good.

@ladyfingers: Hmmmm. I never ate red meat before pregnancy but since I got pregnant I’ve loved it! And I’m having a boy. Interesting!
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@hellobeeboston: I will never eat salmon again after being forced to eat it at 6 weeks pregnant! I also lost my taste for beer.
I don't know if the girl thing is true, but it certainly was in my case!
pomelo / 5331 posts
@photojane: All I want is carbs. For lunch, I had leftover lasagna, leftover penne pasta (we had Italian brought in at work yesterday), and a piece of bread.

Yes and at 25 weeks, I still do. I've attempted to eat chicken and pork (sausage) a few times in this trimester and still can't do it. My husband loves it, though, because he just takes mine and eats it. haha
persimmon / 1087 posts
I wasn't repulsed by it, but I never wanted it. I rarely have beef, and that is all I wanted all throughout my pregnancy.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
No, it was about the only thing I could eat, chicken and rice for about 4 weeks straight! Any other form of meat made me sick! I needed bland colors/flavors.
persimmon / 1205 posts
YES! I couldn't handle ANY chicken in the first trimester and through the entire second trimester I couldn't handle chicken on the bone at all. The aversion has gone away in the 3rd trimester and I am enjoying chicken a lot.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@ladyfingers: @highwire: @Running Elley: I am usually a big meat eater but could not stand it during my pregnancy and ha a girl...I pretty much lived off of carbs and fruit. My friend is basically all about veggies and craved meat her entire pregnancy and had a boy. I am so interested to find out what you all are having
papaya / 10560 posts
Yes! I had no idea I wasn't alone. It was literally the only thing I could not think about, smell, go near, or even look at cooked or uncooked in any way, shape, or fashion. I finally started eat smaller portions of it maybe around 29-30 weeks.
persimmon / 1341 posts
I couldn't stand the sight or smell of any form of meat, cooked or otherwise. Sometimes even talking about it would send me running. And..we're having a girl.
cherry / 237 posts
The opposite, actually -- I wanted to eat nothing but fried chicken. I had a beef aversion until I got into my 2nd trimester, though.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
Even now raw chicken gives me the heeby-jeebys. I'm a-okay with cooked chicken, just not raw.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
I couldn't eat any meat, other than the chick fil a chicken sandwich.
