Most of the parties that I've been to with a smash cake strip the baby down to their diaper and let them have a go at it.

We skipped cake altogether but I agree that just going down to diaper and maybe on a mat or tile so easy to clean up seems to be the norm. No need for an extra outfit!

For my kids I did a smash cake after we sang happy birthday And took pictures. Then we served the guests the larger cake and let the LOs go after the cake wearing the clothes they were already wearing. It was pretty much at the end of the party. They really didn't get into it all that much and just took a small grab.

We let her have fun with a cupcake at her party. She just wore a Baby Bjorn bib over her dress. I think it was before gifts...

I didn't really buy a special outfit. I put him in jeans, a cute bib and hat. I wanted him to have freedom of movement, so I laid down a splat mat and let him have at it. If it's warm enough you could do it in your yard! Otherwise, lay down a mat, tablecloth etc on your wood floor

I don't think you have to buy a special outfit... put her in some bloomers and a bib or even just a dress that is dark in color or she's growing out of anyway. I rinsed out his bib/hat/jeans right away and the chocolate came out easily.
