What recipe did you use? Bonus points for pictures!
I have always baked my LO's birthday cakes from scratch. I'm a decent baker, but a horrible cake decorator! I need inspiration for the upcoming birthday season at our house!

I did! I didn't really decorate it, but made it like tiger stripes (found on Pinterest) and just frosted the cake, and put a topper on.
Edited with picture!

No, I ordered it from a bakery that also does wedding cakes, but it was only a small one (maybe for about 10 or so) and cost $12. I also like Costco cake.

@pmerr: Cute cake! Sticking things on a cake instead of trying to decorate with frosting (my downfall) is a great idea! I should totally look into that!

I made E's cake from scratch this year using this recipe and the chocolate frosting recipe linked in the cake recipe. I'd never baked a cake from scratch before but it turned it pretty tasty. It was more dense than I anticipated but I don't know if that was the recipe or new being an inexperienced baker. http://addapinch.com/cooking/the-best-classic-yellow-cake-recipe/

I did a banana cake with cream cheese frosting for DD's first birthday and did the same as pp and use a simple banner topper.

For her 3rd I did a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting and just did sprinkles on the outside.

I like to keep it simple and tasty- no fondant for me!

I made her frosting for her first birthday but did box cake mix and frosting for years 2 and 3. That trend will probably continue. I like the idea of putting things on the cake instead of decorating it! This year I dipped the cupcakes in chocolate sprinkles as the "decoration". Ha.

@kiddosc: Cute, great idea with the crushed oreos!
@Freckles: I have totally made that Smitten Kitchen cake! So delicious!

I did. I got a little carried away. It is definitely not my best frosting job. Banana cake, vanilla buttercream. I cut square jellies in half to create the borders.

@CakeLady: Wow! Even though that looks relatively straightforward, something tells me it's beyond my skill level.
Nice job though!

I bake their cake every year.
This was a "healthy" chocolate (black bean) cake for guests. Can't share her smash because it has a name banner.
2nd birthday Daniel tiger cake
She requested Daniel tiger cake for ON her birthday. Lol

@regberadaisy: the tiger is adorable! What is that? A round cake and 2 cupcakes for ears?

Whale smash cake for DD2's first.

@regberadaisy: those are simple and cute! I like them!
You ladies have me convinced that I need to go the banner/toy route on cakes and not try to do fancy frosting!

I used the same cake and frosting recipe for first and second birthdays. First bday I just did a little cake (using a small Pyrex to bake it) and cupcakes. This year I made her a Daniel tiger cake following instructions from the pbs website. She was way more excited to have cake than the fact that it was a Daniel tiger cake.
Cake: http://weelicious.com/2010/03/29/mini-vanilla-cupcakes/ (came out kind of sense this year, maybe I didn't mix it enough or too much, or maybe my baking powder is old?) great vanilla flavor.
Frosting: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/140837/sturdy-whipped-cream-frosting/ (my new favorite frosting recipe, whipped cream cream cheese. So yummy and less sugar than a lot of them.)

@pmerr: that came out super cute!!
@kiddosc: so creative!!
@CakeLady: fun!!!!
@lamariniere: yup! PBS Kids tutorial.
I've baked a "healthy" chocolate cake, banana cake with peanut butter cream cheese frosting and regular cream cheese frosting. Forgot the others...

@Foodnerd81: great job!!! I like your interpretation!

@Foodnerd81: My DD doesn't know about Daniel Tiger yet, but she would love a cat cake! I'm going to use this as inspiration for her cake this year!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@regberadaisy: thanks, yours too! I do think I was more excited about it than she was though
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@lamariniere: seriously, I love baking from scratch but decorating is definitely not my forte. I just told DH the other day when the kids are older I want to take a baker decorating class. I enjoy it but I suck at it. Haha
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Foodnerd81: haha DD1 was *obssesed* at 2. She happened to see pictures before her 3rd birthday and requested it again. She just ask me the other day for another DT cake for her 4th.....

DS' first birthday is tomorrow, so I'll be making this sugar-free cake for him:
http://www.fitmamarealfood.com/babys-first-smash-cake-healthy-no-sugar-banana-cake/
(except, with regular flour, because i definitely don't have time to grind my own oat flour!!)

@regberadaisy: I LOVE the idea of putting a wooden block on top!! I'll be stealing that idea for tomorrow - thanks

I made E's birthday cake this year, which fell on Easter. I don't recommend the cake recipe I used, but i have since found cake recipes that are amazing. You take a box of cake mix and you tweak it with sour cream, oil, and eggs. i have a strawberry one that tastes like a strawberry milkshake. The chocolate one I use is to die for. Chocolate pudding, chips, everything. So yeah. DELISH
I shared like a million pictures of her green bunny cake on IG

Happy 1st Birthday to your DS!

I don't remember the recipe for the cake or frosting but it was super easy. I used food coloring to make the cake pink.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@blackbird: Whoa! I did not register that you made that cake! There is no way I can aspire to that!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@regberadaisy: I wrote "Happy birthday E" on it afterwards.
@lamariniere: I do not recommend it, lol. I spent WAY too many hours on it because once i get something in my head, i have to see it through. But I *do* have tasty cake batter recipes! And that buttercream frosting is my SIL's and it is THE BEST I've ever had.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@blackbird: omg that is so cute!!!! Did you make the bunny and carrots too?!?!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
@blackbird: That is amazing! Would you mind sharing some of your tasty cake recipes? And since you made the frosting sound so good, I'd love that recipe too if you get a chance!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@regberadaisy: yep, marshmallow fondant! pain in the ass. i'm never doing it again.
Strawberry cake:
Box of strawberry cake mix
4 eggs
3/4 cup canola oil
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp strawberry extract
Bake at 350* for an hour (we use a bundt pan)
Chocolate:
http://www.food.com/recipe/darn-good-chocolate-cake-cake-mix-cake-87205
(do you see a pattern here? lol)
I also make a poppyseed one with seeds, almond extract, and butter cake.
Frosting:
1 cup butter, room temperature
2 cups Crisco (i've used both butter and regular; depends if you want it tinted or pure white)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tsp butter flavoring
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp almond extract
1 bag powdered sugar
2 TB egg whites (i use the carton stuff and have omitted)
up to 1/3 c heavy cream (whatever consistency you want)
It makes a lot and I usually freeze the frosting so i have some on-the-go as needed. You know...to eat with a spoon

I used a Martha Stewart white cake recipe I found online. I baked a circle cake, cut it in half and created a layered half-circle. I decorated it like a rainbow and then had cupcakes decorated like clouds all around it. Can't find a photo on my phone, or I'd share-- I'm pretty proud of how it turned out!

I do because I love cake decorating and DD has a peanut allergy so supermarket bakery cakes are out. This year was Jake and the Neverland Pirates, I had so much fun making this one! The pic is before I added the sail, but you get the idea.
