So far when we've shared our name with our family we get mixed reactions. Plenty say they don't like it because it is too "American". We are both Hispanic and everyone seems to want us to give our daughter a name like Maria or something or other.
did you go against others opinions? do you regret it?

We picked a name and stuck to it. I don't think I would care that people didn't like the type of name I picked for my child because it is my child. So, I think you should go with the name you like

If people don't like my lo's name they never told me that. If they ever did tell me, I don't think it would effect my decision. It's not their name or their kid, so it's not their business.

My husband's grandma may find out boy name awkward (same as her deceased husband's - but I wanted that name LONG before I knew about him. He wasn't the kindest of men.) Mom-in-law may find the middle name difficult (an aborted baby.) If Mom-in-law finds the name too awkward, we'll go with our back-up name.

When we told our family about our choice it wasn't open for negociation. My father and father in law disliked our choice but t didn't change anything. We are happy with our choice.
Choose a name you like and not what others want.

My parents didn't tell anyone my brother's or my names until we were already born. My dad tells the story that when he called his parents to tell them that they had a grandson named Matthew David, my grandfather (who was basically an alcoholic jerk) responded, "Where the hell did you get that name?" My dad quickly and calmly replied "From the first book of the gospel and from our friend and pastor" and hung up. Moral of the story: Some a**hole might say something rude, but who cares along as you like what you pick!

We will, yes. I know we'll catch comments about our unusual name picks, but we don't really care what other people think. We love the names, and that's all that really matters!

When we have a LO we won't care what other people have to say about our choice. It's not theirs to live with! Dhs family is very vocal about what we should or should not name our future, not even conceived yet, children but I don't really care. They had their shot at it, now it's your turn!

Not everyone in our family was a fan of the name that we chose for our daughter, but we didn't care. It was a name we chose and LOVED. We told everyone they had their chance to pick our names, and now it's our turn to pick a name for our kids.

I told my grandmother, who is Hungarian, and, her first reaction was "I don't like that!" I mainly thought it was funny, and told her she'd like whatever great-grandchild we gave her. After she and I got off the phone, I sent a quick email to my mom and sister saying "ha ha, isn't it funny, grandma doesn't like the name." Whatever, no big deal.
Turns out my sister (a super-aunt extraordinaire, even before DS was actually born) called up my grandmother to scold her for being mean! She said my grandmother justified it by saying "Well, I was worried that he would get teased because it is such an uncommon name!" (um, my son's name is Ben. super crazy, right?) Apparently my grandmother didn't know any Bens growing up in Hungary, so figured there just weren't any.
After my sister chastised her for a while, my grandma felt so bad, that she called and left the most contrite voicemail EVER on my phone... think of this heavily accented grandma-voice saying "I am so sorry. I love the name. I love him. I love everybody. Please forgive me."

No one really said they didn't like it, but they did do the whole saying it wrong, questioning it, saying it wrong again, and then abandoning the subject. Most want to know nicknames to call Wombat instead.

we dont plan to share the name ahead of time. This way we wont have to be swayed by peoples opinions. Once the baby arrives we will tell everyone the name we have already given her.

I'm/my parents are Korean and my in-laws are Chinese. My LO's name as a "th" in it resulting in both sets of grandparents having a hard time pronouncing it. HAHA. The hubs and I were concerned about it but liked the name too much to change it.

We won't be announcing our baby's name until they are born. I figure if they don't like it, too bad. We decided on the name, it's not your child, you can deal. If they want to talk about the name behind our backs, that is fine. I don't see either of our parents saying anything to us about the name we choose for our child.
