I'm at the dentist office right now and they said I need a clearance? I was unaware! I hope I can been seen because I think a filling just fell out over the weekend and I need it taken care of.
Anyone else need an OB clearance to see their dentist?

No, they just stayed away from xrays. But I never had any issues where they'd have to use meds.

No, I just told them I was pregnant when I showed up for my appointment so they didn't do X-rays.

@artbee: I'm actually only here for a cleaning at this point. I didn't even mention the fillings to them yet!

Nope. Like others, I couldn't get x-rays and any work that needed to be done (fillings) needed to wait until after LO was born.

No, I told them I was pregnant and they skipped x-rays, but everything else as normal. That's strange given how important dental care is while pregnant!

Finally got the clearance! I am shocked since it's just a cleaning today. I heard the receptionist call a bunch of tomorrow's appointments to remind them to get a clearance if they are pregnant...oops.
No fillings because of the meds? I wonder if you could get them done without any, which is what I usually do anyway? 8ish months is a long time to have a hole in my tooth.

Nope, my OB actually asked when the last time I had been to the dentist was and when I was expecting to go back. I was told to avoid x-rays and to check with them about safe pain meds if I needed to have any work done beyond a cleaning.

Yes! So annoying for the reasons PP have said, that dental care is important while pregnant. My office wouldn't see me, even for just a cleaning. I had to make a new appointment and come in with a letter from my midwives.

Yeah, I had to get one. I thought it was weird, too, cause when I was pregnant with DS, at a different dentist, I didn't, AND they gave me a filling.

No clearance necessary. I wasn't up for xrays (would have postponed them anyway). When they finished, they even told me to consider a visit in month 9 for a cleaning since in pregnancy your gums can get inflamed causing problems. I'll bet your dentist just wants to be safe.

No, I just didn't do x-rays and told my dentist I was pregnant.

@anbanan15: only if it's an extra visit... and it's clearance from insurance not the ob

Hmmm. Just finished and they acted like no big deal once they got the clearance from the OB! I wasn't due for xrays anyway. Cleaning in 6 months (I'll be 8 mo pregnant) and filling next week without issue. The dentist said that it's usually just a problem because of sitting for so long towards the end.
I actually only had a very small piece of an old filling missing, but when the hygienist was flossing she made the entire thing fall out! So now there is a huge hole! So glad they are filling it next week and not making me wait.

@pastemoo: clearance from insurance would make more sense to me, but the receptionist asked for and called my OB/GYN's office. She also told the other patients they need a clearance from their OB when she called to remind them about their appointments.

Nope, but my dentist (whom I LOVE) is very conservative when it comes to pregnancy and will not perform xrays or use any local anesthetic - two principles with which I'm totally on board in theory, but can see how they would definitely be problematic if you had a dental emergency.

I was turned away at the dentist last week because I didnt have my "permission slip" from the OB for my cleaning appt. I had to reschedule for the end of May.

My old dentist didn't require anything but I got turned away last week from my new dentist because I didn't have permission. And yes, I totally broke down into tears because I have been in severe pains over a toothache.

My dentist told me to check and make sure my midwife was okay with it, but they wouldn't have refused me a visit! My midwife said good dental health is important and I should most definitely be going. I ended up getting a root canal and a crown put on when I was in my 2nd trimester. They just used small amounts of Novocaine and doubled up on those vests when they needed to take an x-ray (which they cut way back on).
Everything's fine with my teeth and DS!
