I was starting to get sick at my last OB appointment and my Dr. told me it was ok to take Tylenol for my headaches. I didn't take any because it was bearable at the time.
My headaches have gotten a lot worse and now I want to take something for pain. I saw my primary care Dr the other day and he thinks Tylenol is a no-no and I should absolutely avoid it.
What is your stance on OTC meds?

I took unisom/b6 until about 18 weeks for morning sickness. And I took Tylenol as needed for hip and back pain. And then I took Prevacid at the end for reflux. Not to mention the RX drugs I was on for my preterm contractions. My OB advised me to take each of these, and my LO was born perfectly healthy. I think 99.9% of physicians would say Tylenol is fine in pregnancy.
ETA: Oh and I had to do two round of antibiotics for a nasty UTI that was causing contractions and vaginal bleeding!

My midwife okayed Tylenol for my migraines (and a cup of coffee/can of soda), as well as Claritin for these allergy attacks I kept having. I avoided everything during the first trimester (well except Alka Seltzer tablets, but I didn't know I was pregnant yet) because I was paranoid, and tried to take them as sparingly as possible the rest of my pregnancy, and only when I absolutely, positively needed them.

no.... but I would have taken tylenol if i needed it.
i don't really ever take anything anyway unless i have a cold.

I took plain Tylenol and was told it was fine during my pregnancy. When I would get really bad headaches in my second trimester the doctor's office also told me to take a Tylenol and drink a can of coke or pepsi for the caffeine. That was the only otc med I took though.

i took Tylenol occasionally in my second trimester because i got bad migraines. my doc said it was fine. i tried not to take it for every little headache, but only when it was really bad. My doc only said not to take ibuprofen. he also okayed me to take benadryl so i could sleep. i never did though because i didn't want to make it a habit. i was planning to the night before my induction, but then my water broke the day before!

@FutureMrsMcK: @CottonCandy: I have never heard of soda helping with headaches...I'm gonna try it! Should it be caffeinated?

@CottonCandy: i definitely had coffee for the caffeine to relieve headaches sometimes too! only once or twice did i have a second cup of coffee when it was really bad. in the end, the only thing that really worked for the absolute worst migraine was to rest, avoid bright lights and eat good.

@autmnlove..Yeah, you should try it! When the doctor's office first told me that I was like "huhh?" but it makes sence since Excedrine has caffiene in it so I guess it must help some how!

@autumnlove: your regular doctor told you not to take Tylenol?? My doctor has said it's fine and I've taken it at least 5-6 times during my pregnancy (also for headaches). But I'll take any medication that's approved by my doctor.
I had a pretty severe, pre-existing case of GERD before I got pregnant and I was on high levels of prescription medication, and during pregnancy I've just been switched to high levels of an OTC brand, that I take twice a day every day.
But I ended up in the ER twice last year for severe pain due to a bad esophegeal stricture, so having that while pregnant would be far worse--I was in literally almost unbearable pain for 3 weeks until I could get an endoscopy and a procedure to open my esophegus back up. Even drinking water in that 3 works hurt me and I lost 10 lbs in a month (not trying to lose weight). I would rather take the meds than have that come back. =)

@autumnlove: Yeah, the caffeine helps. A cup of coffee would work as well but I found that when I hurt like that a soda just went down easier.

Yep, I takeTylenol (and soda) for my headaches, although now that I'm going to PT I haven't needed it as much. I also take an approved allergy med for the crazy Texas weather/allergens.

How weird she told you not to? Tylenol is perfectly safe for pregnant ladies!
I've taken Tylenol and Benadryl so far.

@Anagram: Yes, he is kinda old school! He also put me on an off work order for this week which I thought was extreme but I spoke to my OB yesterday and he agreed with the bed rest!

Tylenol was the #1 okay med on the approved list by my OB to take! I've taken tylenol for pain, and I'm currently taking Nasonex and Allegra daily to control my allergies. Otherwise, I can't even function!

I had migraines for a week straight- I took tylenol (with a cup of coffee) to help.
I have taken Tums once (only time I had heartburn).
I took colace once, but it made me feel nauseous.

My midwife, who is pretty conservative with meds during pregnancy, told me Tylenol is fine. I was in tears because my headaches were so bad, but I felt so guilty taking anything, especially in the first trimester, but someone on here had a good point-- there is no point in being a headache hero. If you are so miserable that you can't do other things (and in your case, you have another LO to care for) take the Tylenol. I always take the smallest dose, and only take it if the headache is really bad AND I'm not just going to bed. Caffeine will also help, as does a soft ice pack on the back of your neck.
I have also been doing acupuncture for my headaches and they have gotten SO much better. I've always gotten frequent headaches, but they got even worse with pregnancy and it really, really helped. Something to consider if it's a chronic problem.

The research absolutely shows tylenol to be safe. There is no reason for you to suffer needlessly.

I was much more worried about taking anything during the first trimester. At the beginning of my second trimester I got a mild flu (even though I had the flu shot), and I took Tylenol to bring down my fever. Regular strength Tylenol is definitely safe during pregnancy, My OB and PCP both OK'd it.
Other than Tylenol and a few cough drops, I haven't taken anything. Not because I've been avoiding it, but I fortunately haven't needed anything.

I took Tylenol and some cold meds during my second when I had a pretty bad head cold. I was coughing so hard it freaked my husband out about me and how jarring it must be to the baby. Felt enough better to sleep.

My ob said yes to tylenol..... Just be careful not to take it too much or the baby can become addicted. Most my meds were prescribed for me though, tylenol didn't cut it.

I took Tylenol twice and Zantac75 quite a bit at the end. I tried tums, cidar vinegar, ect and nothing worked...

I always ran it past my doctor but took 3 different meds for nausea and 2 for heartburn, as well as the odd paracetamol/Tylenol. Oh and thyroid meds too.
