I still have singles! Both cassettes and CDs, it was just easier on my allowance.

No I preferred to wait and buy the album or to record the songs from the radio. Did anyone do that? I would wait and when I heard the song come up I would press record and end up with a mix tape

So weird that you posted this because today's brain strain on our country radio station was "what item is so outdated that it's being taken out of dictionaries" and the answer was cassette tapes!
I bought a few singles... I can name them... one of them was SWV's "Weak"...
@Mrsbells: I loved to tape songs off of the radio I would get so pissed when the DJs would start talking before the end of the song!!!

@Mrsbells: Yes, I loved making tapes of my favorite songs from the radio! But I got reeeeally annoyed if I slipped up and got some talking in by accident. (they should really not start talking before the song is over, ya know?)

@mrs. wagon: @tororojo: Haha yeah it was really annoying when the DJ would keep talking over it! Sometimes I would talk too and mess it up

@Mrsbells: Guilty. It was an especially arduous process for me, as I lived in a small mountain town with only spotty radio signals from the big city, haha. When my favorite station came in loud and clear I was glued to that baby trying to make the perfect mixed tape!
I also loooved to call and request songs (at least until my mom yelled at me for making too many long distance phone calls, haha).

@mrs. wagon: "Cassette tape" is being taken out of the dictionary?? That's ridiculous! They still have them at thrift stores and stuff...
I had tons of cassingles, like Snow's "Informer," Green Jello "Little Pig, Little Pig," Ugly Kid Joe "Everything About You," and Tom Cochrane "Life is a Highway" (I actually still love that song!). But my favorite music story was when I joined Columbia House in like 1992 and my first haul of 12 CDs for a penny included En Vogue, Kris Kross, and Mariah Carey Unplugged.

@Mrsbells: Yep! You'd always get a piece of the DJ talking and a piece of the next song. I also would record them off MTV, I'd hold the boom box up to the TV!! Margaret Cho has a funny bit about this about how you could always hear her mother yelling at her in the background of the tape.
@MediaNaranja: I used to call in and request songs all the time too, and also try to win stuff! I was really good at winning cassettes, I joke that I used up all my winning mojo between the ages of 9 and 13.

@ladyfingers: I was OBSESSED with En Vogue, such a fun music era!
I liked calling to make requests, too, but I don't think they ever actually played them.
