Never occurred to me either.
I don't understand this part of the article. "It’s the rare parent, it seems, who wants a common name for a child. New parents, after all, envision future presidents, Super Bowl winners and cancer curers, not Vatican streakers or college beer-bong guzzlers. " Are kids with common names more likely to be unsuccessful or something?
I guess I'd rather just pick names I like. There was a rapist/murderer named James Taylor in my state but I'm pretty sure no one associates the singer with the murderer

I hadn't thought about doing this but I"m so going to do it now!!

I didn't until reading this question!
Even if we found someone awful with the same name, it wouldn't change our minds, because she is named for family members.

Of course I did! I googled her name right away to make sure it was uncommon and that no one notoriously evil or questionable has it.

We hadn't thought of this, and if we had, I don't think it would have changed anything. We both are big into names that have a special meaning and/or are connected to our families. That being said, my father's name was Jesse and his father's name is James, so any boys will not be named after both of them...

Nope! I actually JUST googled her name the other day, and it was in a name meaning site. I was curious as to what the meaning of her name really was, not that it would change anything!

My husband did and told me about it. He found a blog of, what seemed to be, a really cool, artsy young woman (did I really just type "young woman?") But there's a ton of pictures of the character we got her name from.

We got our from a baby book, and hadn't really thought of it. Both middle names have meanings and/or are family names so we just threw them all together. I just googled Cameron now and it seems to be fine, I'm not too worried, but I doubt I would have changed our minds anyways.

I indirectly did a google search to have the name definition and a standard google search popped up. We are in the clear. Lol

Haha yes I did. Once I had a first and middle name I liked I wanted to see if anyone else had that name. A woman I think I'd like in real life had a blog so I felt better about the name.

We settled on a girl's name well before we knew the gender. So I looked the name up on Google and found someone with the same first/last name on Facebook. She seemed interesting and so I added the girl. I am not the type who adds strangers but apparently she is. Maybe it was because she recognized the last name. Anyway I checked out her page just a couple times (weird, huh!!) but as soon as we found out we were having a girl, I wrote to her and told her I was naming my baby with the same name etc etc and if she wants to delete me, I understand, but that's why I added her. She wrote back a short happy note and we never kept in contact since It's weird to see her name pop up on my facebook though. If she was really weird, I'd probably delete her!
Oh and we did rule out a name for a reason I don't want to go into, but it was as a result of a Google search.
One more thing....I learned this trick in Library Info Science school--put the name in quotes if you want the first name and middle name to stick together when you do a search.

This is a great idea. Just googled one of our names....and the associations were all good. Phew!

I used to do this before we actually gotten pregnant. But haven't tried since. For some reason I'm not as curious now. Maybe I really like the names I have in mind?
