I've heard they usually double by 6m and triple their weight by a year. There's no way my girl will be tripling her weight! She was a little over 8lbs at birth and now at 10 months she's 17.5lbs.

Absolutely not, she is almost two and still hasn't trippled her birth weight.

We haven't been to the doctor yet, but I'm going to say HELL NO. Xander was born at 8 lbs 14 oz - he would have to weigh over 26 lbs to triple! I'm hoping he's over 19 lbs, haha.
And he didn't double by 6 months either. He hadn't even doubled by 9 months!
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
Nope. DD was 7'14 at birth, so triple that would be almost 24 pounds. At her 12 mo check-up, DD was only 20'3. She has grown in length a ton, though - she's a long, skinny bean.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
No, she was 8 lbs, 1 ounce at birth and 20lbs, 5 ounces at one year!
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
Uh, no. She's 10.5 months and about 20 lbs. She was 8 lbs 11oz at birth so not even close, unless she gains 6 lbs in 1.5 months!!
persimmon / 1153 posts
@Adira: My MIL thinks there is something wrong cause she's too small...in her opinion. She was like "Well, you gotta do some catching up in the next 2 months!" I was like...are you kidding me?! I would be horrified and concerned if she gained that much weight in 2 months!
honeydew / 7811 posts
Ummm .... BEFORE 12 months!
is that bad?
Seriously, I have a chunky little dude.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@cyndistar3: I have heard that 1-2 is the hardest stage for weight gain... they are usually picky about food and are constantly on the move.
pomegranate / 3388 posts
I just looked, and actually yes she did. 6.5 lbs at birth, and 21 lbs at 1 year. Now she's about to turn 2 though, and I think she's only 25 or 26 lbs, so she hasn't gained much at all in her second year...
nectarine / 2079 posts
Nope. She was born 7lbs 2oz and was 18.9 lbs at her 15 month appointment.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6703 posts
My LO was 7 lbs 3 at birth and at her first birthday she was 25 lbs 7.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@emg86: If your pediatrician isn't concerned, try to not let your MIL get to you! Mine (and my mom) have been bugging me too and I'm just all "His pediatrician is happy with his weight gain and so am I!"
pineapple / 12526 posts
Nope. She doubled by 6 months, but she'll be 2 in less than a month and hasn't tripled.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
DS was 8 lbs 11 oz at birth, at his 12 month check he was 22-3ish lbs... so almost!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@emg86: let's see... he was born at just shy of 8 lbs (at 7 lbs 14 oz), and he was exactly 25 lbs at 1 years old... so yes! He went slightly above the triple weight threshold.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@Adira: Totally agree. DD actually dropped (percentiles) a bit from 9-12 months, but her ped wasn't concerned at all... said that it is totally normal between weaning/ramping up solids/starting to walk.
pineapple / 12793 posts
Nope. I don't expect her to triple it by two! She only doubled it at nine months.
ETA: she was over 10 at birth so she'd need to be 30# to triple. I'm really happy she isn't thirty pounds at 14 months.
kiwi / 645 posts
No. She was 5 lbs under meeting that mark. The pediatrician wasn't concerned.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
What?! I feel like I've heard that for 18 mos maybe, but not a year. Especially because weight gain slows so considerably once they become mobile.
DD was 8lbs 4oz at birth. She was 20lbs 4oz (84th %-ile) at her 9 month checkup, and I'm guessing she's over 21lbs now at 10 months, but there's no way she's gaining 3lbs+ in the next two months!
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
Uh she's heading that way hah! She was 7lbs 9oz and at her 6 month checkup was 18lbs. Soo, quite possibly!
apricot / 429 posts
Yes, she was 8lbs 7oz at birth and by the time she turned one she was over 24 pounds. She is very tall though, so she isn't very chunky, my MIL always says how petite she is.

@Baby Boy Mom: I didn't know this was a "thing," either, but C did, too.
8 lb 13 oz at birth, 27 lbs at 1 year.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
No way! We go on Wed for her 1 year appointment but she was 8.4lbs and she might be 20lbs if that.
pomelo / 5132 posts
Hmm. He's only 3.5 months old, but he has already doubled his birth weight. I have a chunky dude, so it's possible!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
No - over 10 pounds at birth. He's close to it but not yet at 17 months. He's not really chubby, just big boned!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Yup! DS was born 4lbs 13oz. At his 6 month check up, he was a lil over 15lbs.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Never heard of that - my LO was 8lbs 8oz at birth and 20lbs at a year...but now she's a chunk again at 30lbs at 2 years old
persimmon / 1153 posts
@Adira: Yep, my pedi isn't concerned and neither am I. My SIL had big babies and I guess she thinks mine should be big too and she's always concerned cause I breastfeed and when J isn't interested in solids then we skip them, she must think she's starving, lol.
persimmon / 1153 posts
@heartonastring: I've heard some peditrician's believe that this is about average. Mine doesn't for sure and she thinks it's a terrible "rule of thumb" that some docs use.
persimmon / 1420 posts
DS- 7lbs 11oz at birth, 24 lbs at 1 (a bit more than triple)
DD- 5lbs 3 oz at birth, (almost four and a half times).
Are my babies just fatsos?
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
E won't be! Once she started crawling and walking, she really hasn't gained a lot of weight at all! She was 8 lb 2 oz at birth and is just shy of 20 lb at 11 months
kiwi / 729 posts
I hadn't heard about this measure but DS was roughly 6.5 lbs at birth. Now at 7 months, he is around 20 lbs...big boy. So i guess he will be even bigger by 1 yr...but as long as they stay on their growth curve, everythings ok right?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@emg86: I had the same problem with my in-laws! My SIL breeds big babies! And I EBF'd Xander until 6 months and beyond because it took him a long time to even be interested in solids! Oh well! Just try to ignore them!
grapefruit / 4862 posts
I can see it happening- at less than 5 months she's pretty much doubled it. (7 lb 12 oz, - now 15 lb half an ounce.)
