At your wedding, did your MOH's speech make you laugh, cry, or both? Which would you have preferred?
My sister is getting married this year and I'm stressing out over my speech!

My MOHs speech was sweet but long.
My brothers best man NAILED it this summer. He let me read it beforehand and it made me cry and laugh so hard.

My MOH wrote her speech down, but ended up winging it with my other 2 bridesmaids so it was a bit weird...
DH's best man and groomsmen gave a nice speech though!

My MOH didn't want to talk so we just had the Best Man do it - it started out funny then got sweet and sentimental - LOVED IT!!!!
It wasn't too long either

Both!!!! I was crying at one point and laughing cry at one point. I think the best speeches are the ones that are personal, a few inside jokes thrown in and of course no spilling secrets or embarrassment!

Both! I didn't have a MOH so my two girls did a speech together and they told a funny story and a heartwarming one that made me a little teary. And then all the wishes for a good marriage, blessings, etc were at the end.

My little sister's speech at my wedding was a little bit of both - funny anecdotes about us growing up/family stuff, plus some emotional stuff that made me cry.
My brother-in-law's speech (our best man) was entirely funny and that was great too.
I've given two MOH speeches and one was funny and one was a tearjerker. I think no matter what you do, it will be wonderful if you speak from the heart. Also keeping it short helps too!

It made me do both! However, the best man speech was straight up sentimental, and not a dry eye was left in the room. As much as I loved my MOH's speech, 5 years later, it's the best man's speech that everyone still remembers. IMO, when in doubt, go short and sweet!

My MOH speech was done by my man I honor, and he was fantastic - both funny and emotional. He was crying during it and had some of the guests all emotional. Afterwards the best man was like "I have to follow that?" Haha.

Other - it pissed me off. I love my sister dearly, but she turned it into a *cough cough* propose already! *cough cough* passive aggressive thing directed at her then- boyfriend (now husband).
But it worked, so I guess there's that?

I think you can strike a balance between the two - the ones that cause laughing through tears are my fav

I agree with the advice to keep it fairly short. I've been to so many weddings where the speeches were these long, rambling, "where are they going with this?" type of speeches that had no real point.
I think in these situations, planning and practice are really evident.

Both!!! My sister did "10 things you need to know about the bride" to my husband, it was short but efficient and we both loved it.
GL writing it! Wall me if you want a copy of my sisters, it seriously was amazing!

neither! we didn't have one. she did a reading during our ceremony, but wanted to keep her speaking role to a minimum & we really didn't want the speeches at the wedding to take too long, so my dad & the best man each did one & we got on with the party! i'd keep it short if you can, speeches at weddings tend to drag on & you lose people.

I didn't have a MOH but my dad, and my DH's best friend both stood up at dinner and spoke. Both made me laugh and cry. More laughing for the friend and more crying (okay, bawling) for my dad.

@grizz: lol oh no!
Mine did both! And we all kind of laughed at her because she was crying SO MUCH! She is not the type of person to cry ever and she was balling! Another BM had to go up to help her through it.. it was cute.

Both! But my MOH is super shy and was so nervous about giving a speech... she wrote it before the wedding and it was 7 pages, front and back, handwritten so it was LONG. Like 30 mins long!!! But honestly, as bad as I felt for my guests, I loved every word. It was awesome to hear about our friendship through her eyes and the way she honestly saw my relationship with my husband.
My speech for her, a few years later, was much shorter (and I started out by teasing her about how long hers was for me!) but still pretty long, and I definitely made her laugh and cry.

It was short and sweet and made me tear up. The best M&M's speech was much longer, had us laughing throughout but tearing up by the end.

Honestly, it made me laugh/cringe. Haha. My MOH was wasted and her speech was all about how great of friends we are. There was absolutely nothing in the speech about my (then) fiance and I, or a marriage, or our relationship...nothing.

I had two MOHs:
my childhood best friend -funny and made everyone laugh with stories of when we were 10 years old
my best friend I met in college - made me cry
Honestly, the speech that is more memorable to me is the one that made me cry...I loved both though

My sister was my MOH and hers made me cry. A lot.
I think my MOH speech for my SIL was almost strictly laughing, but my SIL was laugh-crying, so maybe it was both?

@sandy: I had two MOHs
One was my childhood friend that was super wasted so it started off funny then turned into rambling and to this day dh talk about how he brings light to the world...instead of my world.
My best friend from college was short, funny and made me tear. Loved her speech

Made me giggle a bit and cringe a lot. Don't get into inside jokes that only you guys get and events that your family and in laws don't need to know about.

My MOH didn't make a speech. She didn't want to speak in front of everyone.

Both! It was a little long, but she did so good! We've been friend since 1st grade & were roommates when DH and I met, she had a lot of ground to cover
