Asians don't really bake so my mom never made cake (other than the boxed variety from time to time). It feels special to bake birthday cakes, but I'm not much of a baker and I'm pretty lazy when it comes to that to tell you the truth.
So this year we are definitely buying cake!
Did your mom bake your birthday cakes growing up? What were they like?

Nope! My mom wasn't into baking until later in life.
We usually did ice cream cake since I have a summer bday

Yep. I always requested angel food cake, my brothers requested chocolate cake w/chocolate frosting. She always made them, but usually just with a box mix.

My mom almost always baked a cake unless one was requested from a grocery store (one year I wanted a Lord of the Rings cake from the bakery...haha). She is really busy now though with 2 jobs so she just makes boxed mixes usually now and my brothers actually commented "I miss when you didn't do real estate and could make us cakes from scratch!"

Nope! But I bake DS and DH cakes- I figure its a memory they will always have (even if the I cake I make sucks that year

Some years she baked them (from a mix) and other years she bought cupcakes etc. Now she usually buys cookie cakes from sams.

my mom always made cupcakes, not a cake... but just from a box... usually had cupcake decorating parties probably cuz she was too lazy to ice them haha. but for family birthday dinners would buy a nicer cake, usually ice cream cake! yum.

Yep! Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting! And she still does.
Although now I always request raspberry pie because I like it more than cake. She still bakes it for my birthday every year.

My grandmom did because she used to decorate cakes on the side. When I was old enough, I'd make them with her. It was really fun.

My dad bakes our cakes until we hit 13.
After 13, we join the "adult" parties - which is once a month we celebrate all the birthdays that month with our families. We get a cheesecake then.

Yep, my mom is a wonderful baker...but I wanted cake from a box mix and frosting from a can, lol.

Yes my mom baked us cakes (probably from a box) but she baked them in a shaped pan and piped the icing on in little stars. Some of the ones I can remember are Strawberry Shortcake and Raggedy Anne.

Yes! I'm weird and hate the frosting bakeries use, so I always wanted her to make my cake. It helped that she had an art minor and could pull off pretty much anything, because my requests were usually quite elaborate! Now as long as there's chocolate I'm not too picky, haha.
I did bake L's birthday cake this year. DH's usually gets store bought because he usually requests cheesecake or ice cream cake or something not typical like that.

Yep, my mom is a pretty good baker and to this day, the only carrot cake recipe I will eat is hers.

My Aunt or Grandmom did when I was little. Then I think it was store-bought cakes for a while, then in my 20s she had a friend make them. My mom loves to bake these days, but doesn't really do cakes.

I also made requests for jello cakes and cookie cakes from time to time!
my favorite easy birthday cake I make for my toddlers these days is a rice krispie cake! so easy, transports well and stays together in the heat, and easy/clean to eat and slice! just make a realllllly tall one in a spring form pan and decorate accordingly!

When we were little, my mom made all of our cakes. I remember her making a bunny one year. As we got older, we realized, we're a pie family and would usually buy a pie from Baker's Square.
I absolutely plan on making DS's birthday cakes when he's younger. I now work for a company that got it's start in cake decorating so I feel like I kind of have to. I made my first fondant covered cake for my brother's 40th birthday recently and while it wasn't exactly professional, it was quite nice for a first try.

In my house the boxed variety is considered baking.
My bdays were usually spent away from home either on vacations or at restaurants, so my bday dessert was not homemade or boxed. My brother had a lot of homemade or boxed cakes. Thank goodness for ice cream because those cakes suck. Last year my mom made my bro and I a joint boxed bday cake with jelly in the middle. Her feelings were hurt when I didn't take any home.

My mom used to bake brownies for our birthdays when we were really little, but she never baked a cake. She ordered cakes when we were older.
My approach with DD so far has been to order an undecorated cake, and then to decorate it myself. Her birthday comes at a really busy time of the year for me, so I don't typically have time to bake a cake... but I like to do something personalized for her -- hence the decision to decorate the cake on my own.

Nope. Other than the rare boxed cake mix, they usually bought our cake. Once we got older, one of us would make a cake.

Yes! My mom always made one from a box but decorated it so nicely for the theme of whatever party we were having. She even hand made a piñata once! Such good memories!

She used to make cakes shaped like whatever we were into that year, I remember a Noddy in his car, a trombone, and my favourite was the year I turned 18, she made a cake shaped like me, drunk on the floor with a glass of wine in my hand 
She did not have the best impression of me, ha ha.

We rarely had cakes cause my Mom doesn't really like sweets so she didn't think about it. So it was usually boxed brownies or a cookie cake.
