She baked cakes when we requested them. To be honest, "baking a cake" in our house means baking a box cake with can frosting.

my mom always baked cakes for us. she really had it tough because my birthday was first, my dad's was 3 days later, my brother's was 2 days after that. I can't remember us ever sharing one cake - I think there were at least 2 if not 3 every year.
I think boxed cake is really as good as scratch if you make your own frosting. I'm pretty sure she used boxed for the cake, but when we were little would do elaborate shapes (train, cabbage patch doll, etc). always frosted with homemade buttercream plus she can do all the fancy Wilton-style decorating (she was a home ec teacher back when that existed).
I'm pretty sure I'll never live up, I can do some of the decorating but with kids who will be about 10 days apart I am definitely not planning two big fancy cakes!

Uggggh, I KNEW I shouldn't have come into this thread! Haha. Now all I want is cake! And raspberry pie. Ha.
My mom usually made us boxed devil's food cupcakes or cakes, with vanilla frosting and sprinkles on top. I miss them!!

My mom made us a cake from scratch every year. She had a decorating book and we'd go through it and pick the cake we wanted. I remember at 10 or 11, being so shocked when I found out that some other kids' cakes came from bakeries.

Yup, my mom has a special chiffon cake with buttercream frosting that she would always make for birthdays. The frosting uses real butter as opposed to shortening, and it's super good! She had my sister and I take cake decorating classes when we were 10 yo!

No, my Asian mother also did not bake. We usually ordered a cake from the Chinese bakery with fruit filling. Yum!

Yep every year until I was twelve, then we started going out to dinner and getting a cheesecake. Love cheesecake!

Yes, until high school we couldn't afford store bought cakes (nor did we have a grocery with a bakery within an hour and a half drive). We just did the standard 9x13 cake pan with boxed cake and canned frosting- we got to pick the flavors and help make and decorate the cake. It was a lot of fun to participate in it!

Hmmm is it sad that I can't remember at all ! I should just ask her.
Goes to show maybe I shouldn't put in the effort to bake for by ones if they re not going to remember anywya

I think one or two, otherwise it was grocery store character cakes.
