My parents and MIL still live in the same 4 bedroom homes where they raised their children. My MIL is retiring soon and she wants to move to a smaller house.

Yes! My parents sold our 4 bedroom house after I graduated from college. They moved into a 2 bedroom condo.
My MIL moved around a bit, but kept the house and had tenants, then moved back into the house and kept tenants. She just sold the house and moved into a 1 bedroom condo.

They still both live in the large homes. My parents have been talking lately about moving out and into a smaller home, but I dont' know if htey will do it or not! They live in the family home that my great grandfather build! I can't imagine them selling it unless to my sister! Same with DH's parents, they live in the family farm house & they will never sell it.

ha, no. My parents upgraded big time. So much space for two people and a cat. Crazy. I would totally do a condo, but DH is all about the yard

My parents are like @blackbird - they moved somewhere with a lower cost of living and their house is bigger than the one I grew up in. Its silly but they like the yard for their giant dogs.

I'm pretty sure the house they built when they moved to NC is the same size as the one that we grew up in...or bigger!

That was the plan…. but no lol. After I moved out my parents decided to downsize and upgrade (because their previous house was built in the 80s and had very few nice features). They were all set to build a ranch 2 bedroom home when at the last minute my dad talked my mom into finishing the basement and adding a loft with a 3rd bed and full bath! So they ended up moving from a 3 bed 1.5 bath with no finished basement to a 3 bed 3.5 bath with a finished basement that was much nicer than their previous house (although they did downsize the yard from 5 acres to 1/3 acre on a golf course and their HOA does their lawn).
They are now talking about moving again to the city we live in (yay!) and are saying they will TRULY downsize this time since we will all be living in the same city and there is just no need to have more than 1 guest bedroom. But we'll see what happens.

In laws have an apartment now, but my parents still have a large house. My brothers both live pretty far, so my mom wants to be able to accommodate them and their families when they come to visit.

My parents moved to a smaller house when I was a teenager because my parents divorced and my mum couldn't afford the big house we lived in on her own.
DH's parents still live in the big house even though all their kids have moved out.

My parents have just moved now--12 years after the youngest (me) graduated high school--but for their own work situation, not because of the size of the house. My brother is actually buying their house from them though, so I can still call it "my" house

Nope! My parents have lived in the same house since 1982. They recently decided to retire there!

Neither of my parents have moved to smaller houses.

nope! they upgraded to a much larger house on Lake Huron — they wanted a big place so everyone could come and stay with them. And we do!

Nope! My parents still live in the same house. We go back to visit and we sleep in our same rooms. Our rooms are pretty much untouched!

My parents still live in the same house I grew up in. My in-law's upgraded and bought an even bigger house. Empty nest syndrome hit them hard.

My parents have lived in the same house we grew up in since 1979. They have put their blood sweat and tears into that house so they always joke that they will die there....don't think they'll be moving anytime soon!!
It has 3 bedrooms and although the bedrooms were empty for a while after we all moved out, one is now a playroom and the another is a bedroom/nursery for their 3 grandkids

They downsized while I was still living at home; their main reason for downsizing was to move into a townhouse where they don't have to do all the maintenance anymore. We had an avg size house but a huge plot of land and my dad was so sick of either having to do things himself or constantly pay others to do it.
Now my sister lives at home w/ them, I suspect they will downsize one more time when she moves out!

Smaller, yes, though more ££ because they now live in a nicer location.

My inlaws have, and my parents are thinking about it.
It's mainly for the upkeep of the yard!

My parents live in a huge house. 2 of their kids moved back in though

Nope. They're still in the same house they've had since I was 10 years old. The bedrooms are used for grandchildren, visitors, and us for visits. They got a crib and changing table too. They also finished the basement and made it into a playroom. So, it's a very kid friendly/grandchildren friendly house.

Nope, staying in their home. Will stay there until they die or have to be put into an old folks home.
My great-grandparents lived in their 4 bedroom home (complete with 2 living rooms on the main level and a finished basement with a 2nd full kitchen. Could have rented out the basement it was so huge lol) until the inevitable. It was amazing how spotless they kept it right til the end.

My parents still live in the same 5 bedroom house we grew up in, but made a two bedroom suite in the lower level and rent that out.
They're planning to move closer to me though, and buy a smaller townhome.

My dad is trying to sell his big house to build a smaller one but no luck so far.
