did/will you get the whooping cough vaccine in your third trimester?

I did with my second, my old OB didn't recommend it with my first (4 years ago). Our pediatrician even brought it up to me later in my pregnancy with my second (at my oldest's 2 year appointment), she's seen babies die from it and we get outbreaks in our area yearly, so for me it wasn't something to mess around with.

@californiadreams: it's a tough one. I'm not anti or pro vaccine. I've done a delayed, very selective vaccine schedule with my lo. My Dr. never asked me in my first pregnancy and I most likely wouldn't with this pregnancy now that I've research vaccine safety and chose what I feel is right for me and my family.
There are no clinical trials done to prove its safety to take while pregnant. The CDC recommends it (of course) yet the vaccines insert itself states that it is NOT safe during pregnancy.
I'll add a screen shot of an insert that you can check out. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yes, with both. If there's even a small chance it can pass to the fetus, imo it's worth it. DD2 was born at the end of August so she would be too young for flu or whooping cough vaccine. I nerve get flu shots but I get them when I'm pregnant.

@lemondrop: I agree. Whooping cough has made a comeback. I read a sad story about a little girl that died as an infant from whooping cough.

I got it in my third tri with my first and would definitely do it for subsequent pregnancies. My husband also got it and so did family members who were planning on visiting for an extended time before the 2mo vaccines. My dad actually casually mentioned to his GP at his annual that he was going to be a grandpa soon, and her response was "congratulations! And let me go get a tdap vaccine for you."

I'm getting, my husband is getting it, and I have asked the grandparents that will be staying at our house if they would consider getting it.

@sapphire: I know your comment was to MrsPen but my concern wasn't whether the virus was live or not and I'm sure hers wasn't either

Eta: I was up to date on mine because I'm in Healthcare.

Yes, I got it in third tri with my pregnancy.
I wouldn't say I do it totally blindly, but I do tend to trust that my doctor (or my LOs) wouldn't be pushing something that could harm them more than NOT getting it.
Like, I trust them that the benefits outweigh any risks.

Yes and yes. There was a whooping cough outbreak in our area around the time both kids were born!

I got it both times. First one I was due for an update anyway and they recommended doing it in the third tri instead of after since it might help the fetus. This time they specifically wanted me to do it during the third trimester to pass it on to the fetus. My midwives are pretty laid back about everything but this they did feel strongly about.

I'm in MA and I don't believe there are any big outbreaks near me.

Yes, as did the people who would be in close contact with our baby (my husband, in-laws). We have had cases in our town and it is so scary, so all the OBs in this area tell expecting mothers to get it.

I got it with my first, but didn't realize that I was supposed to again with my second 13 months later. I did get it at the hospital right after she was born, but would have done it while pregnant if I had known.

My midwife hasn't mentioned this. I was all up to date with my vaccines before I got pregnant, she did give me a flu shot last month.

Yes, I got it in my 3rd tri even though I'd gotten it for myself less than a year before in anticipation of spending time with my then-newborn niece (we also asked our families to get it as well; my side already had because of my nieces, but dh, dh's parents, and sister got it while I was pregnant). I'll get it again in my next pregnancy as well.

I did get it a month or so ago, but this LO will be a December baby, plus I was overdue for a tetanus booster. Not sure whether I would get it again in a second pregnancy. I also haven't bugged DH about getting any of his vaccines. I was willing to do it for the potential of passing immunity on to the baby, but I'm not sure I feel strongly enough to make him go find a doctor.

No. I didn't feel comfortable getting any vaccines while pregnant and was up to date. I didn't feel there was enough long term studies done that would justify the benefit over the risk.

I won't get one this pregnancy either.

Well crap, I'm having a baby on Friday and didn't even think about this! I got it with DD 3 years ago but am going to call my OB now. Thankful for Hellobee!

I got the TDAP last year while not pregnant and was surprised to hear it's recommended during the third trimester. However, I'm planning to get it if there's a chance it will pass immunity onto the baby.

My OB told me that they give it in the third tri because it will hopefully (though it's not been proven clinically) will protect the baby until they are old enough to be vaccinated. I did it bc the risks were low and I knew my LO would be around a lot of children, mostly vaccinated. But my husband also teaches at a school with a terribly vaccination rate. And my pedi said he could pass thing a onto LO even if he is vaccinated. So I did.

@lady baltimore: Totally your call, but my DH and I both got flu and Tdap shots at the drugstore - no doctor involved! I am pretty paranoid expecting a December baby too.

Yes. It was recommended by my OB's office when I was pregnant with my first in 2012 and recommended even more strongly by my new (/different OB-we moved) doctor a few weeks ago. Both times I got the shot at a drug store. My insurance didn't cover it this time but any piece of mind is worth $60 to me. I also got the flu shot, but I always do.

sounds like the majority of people get it and has had it recommended it to them, which is already making me think i will get it. I will just wait until i talk to my midwife this thursday to make a definite decision.

@hummusgirl: Good to know. I have of course heard that one can get the flu vaccine at the drugstore (though we don't generally get that one), but didn't realize that TDaP might be available, too. Did you get them both at the same time?

  35. reverie

@californiadreams: my son was born june 2013 and they recommended that I get it third trimester then. at that time it was newer information... so this has been going on about 3-4 years.

  36. reverie

    kiwi / 661 posts

@californiadreams: the thought is the mother's immune response to the acute vaccine in the third will boost the child's post birth response. It takes a few weeks for that to point which is why they recommend it earlier third trimester vs. the end. I'll absolutely get it this pregnancy even though I hate shots with a passion

It was never offered with DD. I got it withDS and felt like sick for 2 days after. In the future f I have another baby I would only get it if the kids were going to some kind of daycare. If they would be home with me I would decline.

First pregnancy I got it at the hospital, I didn't realize you were supposed to do it while pregnant. Second pregnancy same thing, I thought I was covered from the first time since they are only 3 years apart but I guess I was supposed to do it again. Even my kids' pediatrician would have been ok with not doing it the second pregnancy though!

I didn't, although did get it while I was still at the hospital.
