I woke up this morning with a horrible headache, coughing, sneezing, and chest congestion.
I haven't taken any meds during pregnancy thus far but I might cave. I need to find out what cold meds are safe.

How far along are you? I took Tylenol, Benedryl (had been having an allergic reaction) and Claritin (bad spring allergies). I think the only thing I took during the first trimester was the Tylenol for a migraine.
Here's a handy chart about safe meds:

I hope you feel better!

Robitussin dm was on the safe list my ob gave me. I took it several times when pregnant and felt sooo much better!

my friend is an OB and said that Dayquil cold medicine was safe - but i would double check... I had one cold while i was pregnant but didn't take anything, just lots of hot water with honey & lemon and steam - but had it lasted any longer than the 2/3 days it took i definitely would have taken something.

I only took medicine when I needed it. Robitussin, Claritin, and Sudafed were all on the safe list. I didn't really catch a cold until late second trimester, though, and I haven't taken anything for longer than a week. Lots of hot teas, sleep, and saline rinses, though.

I'm 23.5 weeks. I think I'm going to try the hot water with honey and lemon first, that sounds like it'd be great! I took a warm shower and that helped a bit.

I have had a really bad cold for the past 4-5 days, but I've managed to avoid medications thus far (I am super paranoid!). I have used a humidifier, breathe right strips, and a neti pot. I am finally starting to feel better! Here is a picture from my Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy book re: safe medications.

I took tylenol when I absolutely needed it. As long as your doctor okays the medicine, it should be fine.

@septemberlove: maybe shower soothers would help. It's like a disk that desolves while you're in a shower and you breathe in the stuff & it opens you up. They're awesome!! Don't know for sure that they're ok during pregnancy, but I would guess they are. There are a bunch of recipes floating around the web to make your own if you're into crafting while ill (I'm not, they sell 'em at Walgreens!)

definitely ask your doctor. I suffered from awful post nasal drip and was ok'd to take sudafed during my pregnancy because it was that bad! also took benadryl after first tri, but hated it because I then felt hungover and dizzy after it wore off. it got to a point where it was interfering with sleep and life in general, and my doctor said I could take nyquil to sleep, and it was heaven. I really only took one dose per night though. my LO is totally fine!

I had a pretty bad cold late in the second tri. I ended up not taking anything but I came close. Sitting in a steamy bathroom helped, as did neti pot and saline spray. Be careful with shower disks and that kind of stuff because I read somewhere menthol isn't safe.

I took a half tab of tylenol when I had the flu and I thought I would cry from my head hurting so bad. Other than that, I didn't take any meds.

I've been really struggling with this. My midwife OKed Tylenol even in the first trimester, and so far the only ailment I've had is headaches/migraines. I feel so so guilty the few times I've taken Tylenol, but sometimes it's that or throw up from the headache and accompanying nausea, or miss a whole day of work that I really can't. So, so far at 12 weeks, I've taken a total of 4 regular strength Tylenol and I'm ok with it, but I only do it when it's really, really bad. I've had a headache for 3 days but only took a Tylenol when I was at work and couldn't get anything done unless I took the edge off somehow.
For a cold I second the steamy shower. Someone suggested to me on another thread to soak a washcloth in hot water and lay with it over your face-- it cools off pretty quickly but in those first few minutes it's nice and steamy and feels wonderful. I might try that again tonight with a heating pad on high nearby, so when it cools off I can rewarm it without getting up (lazy!).

I only took Tylenol when I wasn't feeling well. I would ask your Dr. what is safe to take.

Yes, I've been very sick off and on for the last 15 weeks, and have had to take more meds than I'd like. I have daily tension headaches that I take Tylenol and Midrin for, and took Chlor-Trimeton and a Z-pak of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I've only taken what my doctor tells me, and the relief from the pain is worth it.

I took a lot of meds. I get severe migraines and was in the er every other weekend for them in my first and second trimester because the meds they gave me weren't enough. I felt so guilty the whole time, but lo came out healthy, and really I had no choice.

My doctor OK'ed Zyrtec, I have terrible allergies, and Tums for heartburn (and other stuff but Tums was all that worked for me). And I took Tylenol a few times when I had headaches. Ask your doc, they'll point you to the right thing!

I took Zantac during the first trimester for heartburn, and I've started taking it again periodically in the third tri. My doctor OK'd, and it has been a lifesaver. I also took Emetrol for nausea during the first tri, which my doctor recommended. It was the only thing that helped! I think as long as your doctor says it's okay, you're safe.

I just took a colace for some bad constipation
My OBs office has a downloadable pdf of approved meds, and thankfully colace was on there.
