Lo is a good sleeper. I hate saying that because it always feels like lighting will strike me down and she will suddenly stop sleeping. I guess that's my question. Do really good sleeping babies suddenly stop sleeping? I feel like I'm constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop and one day we won't sleep anymore.

I think it depends. DS was a good night time sleeper and had no bad sleep associations. So regressions weren't too bad. I've had friends with amazing sleepers, but nursed to sleep and then were gently placed in their crib. Once they hit 4 months all that went out the widow because they didn't know how to put themselves to sleep.
My son did go through small blips at regressions or with teething, but he's been good for the most part.

I'm afraid of the same thing. LO 2 is a great sleeper at 3 weeks old compared to LO 1. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop too since LO 1 was a colicky baby starting at 5-6 weeks old and lasting until we sleep trained at 6 months.

LO2 slept like a dream until she was 3.5 months. It all went downhill from there.

LO has been a great night sleeper and hasn't had too many regressions. She did have some trouble with falling asleep for a few days around 11 months and some wakeups occasionally when she is sick. She is 3 and is super consistent.
LO 2 was a really consistent napper and night sleeper from 6 months until 11 months. She is 2 and isn't a bad sleeper but lately she wakes up 2-3 times a month in the middle of the night for random reasons....she wants water, she wants to say hi or she wants her blanket fixed! She also wakes up more when sick.

Lo1 has always been a good sleeper. Morn wake ups happened w teething once or twice. Sometimes when he's sick and nowadays if he had a bad dream. But otherwise still a good sleeper at 2.5!

LO1 is 27 months and has always been a good sleeper. We've obviously had some bad nights because of illness and teeth, and sometimes he fights bedtime, but in general, he's been a good sleeper his whole life!

My son is 2.5 and has always been a good sleeper. He's had one single night in his whole life that he was up almost all night (New Years - fireworks). Hopefully the trend continues with #2, but I have a feeling I won't be so lucky. Lol

Yes, mine did. Having said that I think I probably could have fostered things to continue the good sleep habits but I didn't. Then he discovered he liked sharing the bed with Mummy and Daddy much more than sleeping on his own

DS has always been a really good night sleeper since we did sleep training around 4 months (he'll be 3 in September). He was great at naps at one point, but then started a nap strike, and has been hit or miss since. The only thing that would interrupt his night sleep would be teething or sickness, but I definitely know that was minor.

Definitely possible, at least in the short run. DD2 slept through the night (we're talking anywhere from 9-12 hours) from 5 days old until nearly 3 months old. In that time she had a serious illness and a major move, which could have influenced her sleep for sure, but it's hard to pinpoint the shift from fantastic sleep to pretty bad sleep (being up at least 2 times between 10 pm and 7 am on a good night, being awake screaming for hours on a bad one).
We tried a lot of tactics to deal with it, but just as quickly as the switch flipped to bad, things got good again (STTN from 8 pm - 7 am about 95% of the time) shortly after her first birthday. So if things go bad, there is hope.

DS slept pretty well as a newborn and from about 12-16 weeks he STTN. Then bam. Sleep in the crapper. Tiny naps, lots of wakeups. We are now at 12 months and things seem to be getting a little better.

My baby is 6 mo. He slept amazingly from 6 weeks-3 mo and then growth spurt/sleep regression/vaccines happened one after another. Plus we moved him to crib and then went on vacation and he slept with us. Basically the crib transition was the clicker that led to him being a bad solo sleeper and the vacation spoiled me from getting up at night. Since then he wakes up frequently to eat but goes back to sleep basically from 8p-7 or 8a. So he's not a bad sleeper but he wasn't into sleeping alone and I wasn't motivated enough to keep trying.

Mine did. She was an amazing sleeper from birth. I always had to wake her to eat and she was sleeping 5-6 hour stretches by a month. By 2 months she was STTN from 9-6, eating, then sleeping until 8 or 9.
Then around 3mo it all went to shit. Spiraled down, down, down into insanity until 6mo when we sleep trained. Since then she's been hit or miss. She sleeps okay for a few weeks, then horrible for a week or two, then okay again, etc.

Like you I am afraid to post bc I don't want to jinx myself but DD has been a good sleeper from day 1. she was doing 4 hour stretches her first week and was doing 6 hr stretches over night within a month (and she was EBF). She is now 19 mos and is still a good sleeper. We've had maybe 5 bad nights.. maybe.... and I'd say 5 is high. 2 were from teething, 1 time she vomited.. but that's about it. She is an early riser though but she goes to bed early so I can't complain.

My DS was a terrible sleeper until 8 months when he finally sttn. He's now 18mo, and since sttn he has had only one night wake up where I've had to go in - even through teething, illness etc. I'd say he was a great sleeper still but I'm not sure 18 months is old enough to make the call, I'm still scared to post this in case I jinx it!

We went through some regressions but all in all he's been a good sleeper reliably. He started STTN at 8 weeks and regressed a few times. Now at 16 months he STTN 90% of the time.

Nope, my good sleepers have remained good sleepers! They clearly never got the memo about the four month sleep regression (or any other sleep regression for that matter) and I am perfectly ok with that!

This is so illuminating! It also made me curious as to what people consider "good" sleepers and "bad" sleepers to be. I feel both hopeful and terrified. We are at 7.5 months right now and so I know we have a possible sleep regression in the future, not to mention starting daycare.

My oldest is 5. She was a bad sleeper as a baby and is still a bad sleeper today. I now realize I didn't DO anything or not do anything to foster this. She is a light sleeper and wakes up frequently.
My middle is 3, he was a fantastic sleeper as a baby and still is today. I thought I did this, because we did CIO at 6 months, so I patted myself on the back. Then came my youngest....
My youngest is 18 months old, I did the exact same thing with him as I did with my middle. He STILL cries when we put him in the crib. He sleeps through the night, except when he's sick, but he ALWAYS cries when we put him down (like 5-45 minutes, no joke) -
I used to wonder this too! LO started STTN at 8 weeks old and whilst we have had a little nap/bedtime fighting, she has pretty much never woke up in the night. She deals pretty good with occasional late/no nap, late bedtime, jet lag etc. We are lucky. I know #2 is just going to be the worst sleeper ever!

We hit a rough patch at 4-5 months, sleep trained, and not much has phased her since, except the 18 month regression.
My 1 month old will only get up once a night most nights and sleeps like a dream-and I know he's going to hit some bumps. Crib transition, swaddle weaning, etc etc. we are really strict about sleep so hopefully that helps keep it somewhat contained....but we'll see

@MamaBehr: dd always cries too, like she has to cry in order to sleep, although it rarely goes longer then 10 minutes.

Lo is 2.5. Months 18-20 were pretty bad with frequent night wakings. But that's it. Before and after have been great with only random wake ups and great naps.

LO1 was always a dream sleeper - 8 hours straight by 9 weeks, 12 hours STTN by 4.5 months. He's now 27 months and we lay him down between 6:30-7 PM and he wakes up around 7 AM and waits for us to come get him in his crib. Never fights sleep, wakes overnight maybe once every 3 months because of illness, bad dream, who knows - and wants a snuggle and then wants to go back to sleep. It's insane how easy his sleep is.
LO2 has been much more of a battle - horrendous wakeups for the first 4 months, epic battles over laying down in his crib (he's been in the crib from about 10 days old, I am not flexible with sleeping arrangements). We sleep trained at 4 months, it worked for awhile, now we're doing it again because he hit a rough patch for reasons unknown (teething? milestone? no idea). Half the time now I would say he goes down easily, between 6:30-7. He never tries to stay awake during his dream feed around 11 - he eats with his eyes closed and then passes back out in his crib. And he usually sleeps until 7 AM, sometimes waking between 4:30-6 (but no feeding and he is not getting up for the day then, just NO).
I really think babies are predisposed to be good or poor sleepers, but I will do literally everything in my power to get the best long term sleep habits possible. I don't know how so many parents exist through so many months (years?) of broken sleep. I would be a horrible person.

Mine has been a decent sleeper. Lots of wakeups but very easy to settle back down and doesn't fight us on bedtime or naptime. But the regressions and teething were bad and affected him for a week or more at a time and I cry every time and wonder if he will ever sleep again (he does).
