A lot of strangers will refer to my son as "she". I figure it's not worth correcting and let it go. I can see the frustration factor though for little girls in sweet clothes and the mistake still occurring.

Yes, same thing - my daughter would be in a pink frilly dress with a pink bow in her hair and people would still call her a boy. I never understood it either.

When my LO's wearing a neutral color (green), people think she's a boy. -.- She looks like a girl to me though!

Yes it happens all the time. She'll be in pink and ruffles and people will say him or boy. I would understand if she wasn't, she looks like a baby right now. But when she's in pink and ruffles I start thinking maybe I shouldn't change the wardrobe that much if the next one is a boy.

Our LO is very boy-ish. We'd have him in all blue, with trucks, trains, etc on his clothes, and strangers would still refer to him as "she" or "her". I usually just let it ride, not a big deal. But seriously, people, take notice of the details. I try to suss out what gender a baby is before using the appropriate pronoun. If they're in gender neutral stuff, and it's hard to tell, I use words like "cutie" or "sweetie", etc. Every now and then, I'll come out and ask, "boy or girl?", but always in a nice way.

My daughter was wearing a pink onesie with pink flowered pants that have a ruffle on the bottom, and several people said "He's so cute!". Huh? Oh well.

@Maysprout: omg. I've had people call my LO a him or he when she's wearing pink too! wth. -.-

We went ti visit my family a few months after my daughter was born and my great grandma kept calling her a boy even though she wore dresses the whole time.

My mom tells me stories about how people would talk about "what a cute boy" I was when I was a baby, even when she had me in a dress with a bow taped to my head.

I think sometimes people are trying not to assume what gender the baby is, or when they see your infant they are thinking about the last baby the saw, possibly a loved ones.

I don't know how I'll react if people call our girl a boy, guess we'll see soon!

My mom used to get this all the time with me. I think Mrs. D has it right. If people have a relatively new baby in their life they probably just kind of default to assuming all babies are the same gender as the little one that is special to them. I feel bad even making this comparison but I always just kind of assume all dogs are boys because I've only ever had boy dogs. So it's probably mostly just due to that person's context of babies.

I remember when we were little, my mom and her friend would take us out and almost always someone would confuse my brother for a girl and her daughter (same age as brother) for a boy.

Her daughter had no hair until she was much older, whereas my brother had little strawberry blonde ringlets - BUT - he'd be in blue and she'd be in pink. Still people messed it up. I never understood it. Plus, even if their names came up people would still be clueless...and these weren't gender-neutral names. Will and Savannah.

DD's still bald at the age 1.5, and even with pink/girl clothing people mistake her for a boy, all the time. I don't care anymore. I don't even usually correct people, lol. Usually I'm only talking to these people for a minute or two anyway, and it's not like DD knows that she's a girl, so I figure no harm's done.
