I tend to trust the GPS blindly... my wise wife uses her brain and common sense.
Do you always believe the GPS?

Do you always believe the GPS?

No! Sometimes it loses its mind entirely. And it never seems able to accurately pinpoint houses. It always says I'm there at least a block too early.

It depends! My car's GPS isn't that great and tends to lead me in circles sometimes.
My phone's GPS I tend to trust more blindly and it has gotten us in trouble before. When we were in Orlando visiting family, we were trying to get to a restaurant to meet relatives and it actually took us to a field in the middle of nowhere near Disney World.

I don't trust the SatNav--it doesn't even get our postcode for our house correct!

In the absence of better information, sure. But I do try to use common sense as well.

There's so much construction always going on around here that I don't. I always just Google map it.

In highly populated area, yes. In rural, no! My GPS tried to get me to go thru someone's fence, I was like, what the heck? Kinda like in the office, the guy went into the lake.

I trust it to an extent, but I try and use my brain too. The GPS on my phone is awesome.
coconut / 8483 posts
Usually because I only use it when I have no idea where I'm going, so my brain wouldn't come in handy then anyways haha
My brother drove my Gran to visit her sister and the two of them did NOT believe the GPS and called my dad every 5 minutes to verify the turns before they took them - it was quite hilarious.

@mrbee: This is the exact description of my husband and I. It makes me crazy that he listens to whatever the GPS says but I prefer using my sense of direction and just paying attention to where I am
pomelo / 5220 posts
um no because the one in my car is ridiculous sometimes. She has led us down the wrong way so many times, against my better judgment!

I have a terrible sense of direction and would love trust it completely! But we have some country roads where the GPS is worthless, and lots of construction in town that also throws it off.

So far I haven't had issues with gps/google maps!

Yes for the general directions and then I use my own eyes to pinpoint where it actually is on the street. Although google maps is usually spot on.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
I put a lot of stock in google maps, but I also use my sense of direction and any contextual info I might have.
The title of this thread reminded me of that scene in The Office where Michael drives into the lake.

I used to back in the U.S. I use Google Maps religiously now! It's better than GPS here, especially since i can save addresses on my laptop and I'll be able to just map it as soon as I get in my car instead of putting it in the GPS. I hardly ever have to type an address in. Just copy and paste! But I also try to remember how to get to places I frequent so I don't always have to rely on Google Maps. Sometimes it drops and I have to restart the directions again.

@rattles: Bahaha!
I tend to ignore her if I really think she's wrong, which she often seems to be. I should probably replace her. She seems to have a terrible sense of direction.

I do for basic trips in the city, but ever since the whole James & Kati Kim incident, I always bust out a map from AAA for road trips.

@HabesBabe: I had forgotten the story so just looked it up... Wikipedia said they used a paper road map!

I haven't had any problems with Google Maps, but Waze has led me astray before. On more than one occasion it's tried to tell me that a place I was going (on a big, main street) was off hidden in a tiny neighborhood. I knew where I was going once I was on the big street, but if I didn't I would have been very confused and lost. Waze also sometimes randomly tries to make me go the very long way home.
I always keep paper maps in the car, though.

@mrbee: I've read that, too, but I remember that there was "controversy" at the beginning of their ordeal that suggested they had used a GPS system-- ever since then, I always think they're going to steer me wrong.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Definitely not. Especially if I know a better way to get there, but only needed the gps for actually arriving (like I know the better freeway, but not familiar with the exit, etc)
I use the maps on my phone.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
No. Not after we ended up in a random driveway in when we were driving in Australia. We were supposed to be on a main road.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
For the most part, yes. If I'm familiar with the area I'll take my own way on occasion but if I'm going somewhere new it's GPS the whole way.

@tequiero21: LOL! I The Office!!
I have the worst sense of direction, so yes, I always blindly follow the GPS!
pear / 1697 posts
Nope, I'd grudgingly oblige its instructions when I have no better information, but, otherwise I treat what it tells me as a probably helpful suggestion. I also know that my GPS has trouble with over/under-passes. If it suddenly starts recalculating in a place with multiple layers of traffic, I know it just mistakenly believes I'm on the wrong level.
When I'm driving somewhere completely unfamiliar I always look over the route on google maps before I leave. If it is someplace rural, I also check their website for disclaimers about GPS mis-routing. For instance, this warning is on the site of the place I'm going on vacation next month: "Your GPS will direct you to take a left onto Lake Rd. Lake Rd is unpaved and has multiple livestock gates across it. We strongly recommend continuing until Meriville Ln and taking a left there instead. Lake Rd may be impassable in wet or snowy weather."
