I feel like I can usually tell but not right now! No fever, dry diaper, not hungry, doesn't want a teething ring...she doesn't even want her thumb!

I used to, but lately she just seems to scream for no reason. She doesn't want to be held, but cries if you put down. She reaches for a bottle, but throws a fit if try to give it to her. She acts tired, but refuses to go to sleep... *sigh*

No. She's starting to communicate better, talk, etc but sometimes she just can't tell me what she wants yet.

Definitely not. It's frustrating! He's only 8 weeks but I feel like I ought to generally have a better idea than I do! It's hard to discern fussiness/gas/hunger late at night. He never cries for diapers, which I guess helps rule 1 thing out!

@autumnlove: When I can't tell why the kids are crying, I always worry that there's a little hair wrapped around a finger or toe!!

@mrbee: OMG I'm not the only one!!!! I always check his toes. And I always check the feet in his sleepers to make sure there are no lint or hair balls because I'm paranoid about that
For the most part I can! He has very distinctively different cries... it's SO obvious to me - but not DH!

I used to! I find that it gets harder when they get older. I figure if me hugging her or giving her my cell phone stops her crying, it's nothing serious!

With Wagon Jr. after a while I pretty much knew because I had him on such a strict eating/sleeping schedule, I would know whether it was because he was hungry or tired. Otherwise he didn't cry much (whining later on was a whole different story). Now with LMW I don't really care why she's crying... I pretty much assume it's either that she's hungry or she's just cranky and needs to sleep. It's usually the latter!

Nope, but if nursing/bottle doesn't fix it, we just stand&sway/walk.

He has pretty distinctive cries but I'd say I know exactly what he wants/needs only about 80% of the time. There's one that breaks my heart--always when he's sleeping, the saddest, most pitiful little choked out cry...when he was sleeping in my arms I would cuddle him close and start singing to him.
