Is baking a Christmas cake a tradition in the US? If so, what's your favourite recipe? My SIL just sent me this one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/christmascake_2359 I figure I'll try it but am still looking out for good recipes. I don't think I'll feed it with brandy either.
If you don't bake a Christmas cake, do you bake something else instead?

Yes! For the past 4-5yrs I've been baking persimmon bread with dried cranberries, walnuts, and brandy or cognac. I use James Beard's recipe and it's always a big hit.
I'm Korean, and grew up eating persimmons, which are not so common in the US. I think it's a really cool way to blend our new family's cultures.

We always travel during Christmas so nope! But if I were to bake something, it'd definitely be cookies or baked smores pie. Mmmm!

Christmas cake?! Definitely not something I've ever heard of.
We do Christmas fudge and cookies.
Christmas cake actually sounds like it could be a fun thing to do...

never heard of Christmas cake, but every Christmas we make a homemade German Chocolate cake and homemade chocolate cake!

Fruitcake? In the US, it's a joke that they're all terrible and disgusting.
I don't make one, I don't really like the bits of candied fruit, but I am intriguied by the idea that you bake it so far in advance and then kind of steep it in alcohol.

My family makes a Buche du Noel most years but most people I know don't make a Christmas cake. It's mainly about gingerbread cookies and peppermint ice cream.

It's not a Christmas cake per se but I make a red velvet cake for my SIL every year (her birthday is the 26th, but she can never wait to eat it, so we have it on Christmas Eve/Day).

No, I don't, but my English MIL always does. She will be visiting us this year and we are doing mince pies since I prefer them!

Nope, we are more of a cookie/treat family. In my area it's very common to exchange tins of cookies/treats with family/friends/neighbors.

@swurlygurl: It is fun, especially to decorate. Lots of people turn the royal icing into a snow scene. My grandparents used to make ours and stick santas and snowmen on it.

@looch: Ha ha, really? They're not that bad. I feel like Christmas cakes are nicer than regular fruit cakes, they just taste more... Christmassy I guess 
I love the marzipan the best. Yeah you traditionally bake them around now then let them get boozy in time for Christmas:)

@travelgirl1: I've never heard of a Christmas cake! My family does pies, similar to thanksgiving (pumpkin, apple, mincemeat, etc.).
Christmas cookies are very popular too!
Just because I love to bake and try new recipes I brought a chocolate cake to christmas dinner two years ago and my family looked at me like I was a total weirdo!

Hmm, I've never heard of a Christmas cake per say but we always bake cookies. I may make some different kinds this year. Our Italian tradition is always having struffoli, or honey balls for dessert.
