Whenever the heat is on we close almost all of the ones upstairs. It is always way hotter up there than downstairs since heat rises. LO's room is upstairs and ours is downstairs. Our vent is open and hers is closed and our rooms are the same temp!

We used to do this, but then we had out ducts cleaned and the guy kind of freaked out. I don't remember the exact reasoning, since it was third hand through my husband, but here's an article that echos what we were told about it.

We have radiators, so I turn them off in the hallway and kitchen, and adjust the dial depending on the room.

I've heard that closing off vents upsets the delicate balance that allows the system to heat the house. But our house is old and the upstairs never heats up enough, so we closed a ton of vents. It made a bit of difference, but we still needed a space heater.

Do you have dampers in the heating/cooling vents in your house? We did and we changed them in the Summer to direct more air upstairs and in the Winter to direct less air upstairs (since heat rises) and it made a world of a difference for us. Now, in Asia, we have controls in each room (literally...family, dining, kitchen, all the rooms) so we don't have that problem anymore. I just have to adjust the temp to make it comfortable for sleeping. And if you're worried LMW's room is too warm, put a small fan to circulate the air. I used to do that in the room with the crib b/c it was always the warmest room no matter what time of year.

yep, the ones in our guest room and dining room and laundry room because they're never used...we have several of the ones in our basement closed now too. it's surprisingly really warm down there now that it's finished.

Yes! We close all of the vents in our upstairs. We have an extra bedroom up there that we just use for storage, and a den that I use for my crafting room! When I know that I want to go up there and sew I'll open up the vents, but otherwise we don't use the space that much, so why heat it??
