Always feel even when trying new recipes. We know what our tastes buds are and can look at a recipe to know what it's lacking. We always change recipes!

A little bit of both, I do a lot of subsituting on recipes and adjusting for my family, baking I never mess with...haha

By feel, except when baking. Though, I will usually look at a bunch of recipes to get an idea of what to do, especially the first time.

Always with a recipe. If I do something by feel it always ends up in disaster.

I rarely use recipes. Though I did when I was first learning how to cook. Now that I'm comfortable in the kitchen, I cook mostly by feel.

Definitely by feel, unless I'm baking and then I'm more careful about following the recipe. And even then, at least with things like bread I can usually feel if the dough isn't right and fix it.

I rarely use recipes. I like to just throw stuff in a pan and see what happens. haha

Almost exclusively by feel, though I do pull out recipes on occasion. I'm like @regberadaisy: I end up changing the recipe anyway!

@prettylizy: haha yurp. I look at recipes when trying new cuisines. ie if I'm making a Latin dish I look at recipes! Can't make that up!

I adjust a recipe based on the ingrediatnts, the only time I use a recipe is for baking

if it's something totally foreign, i'll probably follow a recipe the first time, ie: how to properly roast a whole chicken so it doesn't dry out. or if i'm using new ingredients, i'll probably follow a recipe to ensure i don't overcook things, etc. most of the time i follow my gut though - i think cooking is more of an intuitive thing for me (unlike dancing... or something that requires coordination, i totally suck!)

I tend to use recipes more as ideas rather than instructions. I know what flavors and combinations we like so I don't follow recipes.
clementine / 896 posts
Recipe only. And even then I'm crossing my fingers it comes out ok.
bananas / 9227 posts
By feel. Even with new recipes, I tend to adjust to my taste (less salt, a touch of spice, more herbs, etc).

I used to be such a stickler for recipes, but now I refer to a recipe and adjust to the ingredients I have. I used to stress about making sure I follow the recipe exactly but I've since learned that most recipes can be altered.

For new stuff I always follow the recipe. And since we are doing a weekly meal plan now, every recipe is a new recipe. I will usually up the spiciness factor and usually put in more pepper than what is called for - but I like to know what the "base" recipe tastes like. I make notes if I adjust so I can recreate it later.
I also like to cook using my imagination and can make a lot of basic meals by "feel" but if I am using a recipe, I will follow it.

I usually look at a bunch of different recipes for what I want to make, if its something I've never made before, and then just wing it. Most of the time though, I just do whatever I want

By feel, except for measurments for the basics in a baking recipe, but seasonigs are always by smell/taste!
bananas / 9357 posts
I tend to always follow recipes. Especially the first time I make something. If I've made it a lot and I know it off the top of my head, then I go by feel.
honeydew / 7589 posts
I don't think I've measured an ingredient in years. I do look at recipes to give me ideas, but I don't "follow" them.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
By feel except new recipes that I haven't ever had like the time I made CoqauVan.
