I cook by feel almost always. Unless trying out a new recipe from HB, or even if I am, I almost always spice and flavor by feel for my/dh's tastes rather than following recipes to the tee.
Baking on the otherhand I follow every ingredient and step!

Recipe. I can't cook by feel and it sucks!!
My dad does and when I ask him how much of this or that, he always says "just taste it!". If I could, I wouldn't be asking dad - gah!! And he's such a great cook, and I can't "inherit" his recipes.

Feel and taste. I always always add garlic salt and more garlic. I find most recipes aren't robust enough in flavor.

Feel and taste as well. I find most food too salty, so I have to adjust.

@Alivoo01: my dad cooked like this. The easiest way to get the recipes is have him cook it a couple of times and take an average of what he puts in.
I cook by feel/taste.

Asian food - by feel and taste
American and Italian food - recipe exactly until I tweak it to make it how I like it.

I think a little bit of both. I guess I mostly look to recipes for inspiration but it is really rare that I follow it to a T.
I don't bake much precisely b/c you can't bake by feel.

Recipe, but usually try to tweak it a bit to make it my own or to suit our tastes.

Mostly recipe. I'm trying to tailor more to my taste and be more creative though. That basically means following a recipe but then adding different things every now and then. For example, today I made veggie soup, but instead of the pasta that the recipe called for, I added some leftover brown rice I had on hand. Then I also added some white beans to give it a little more substance and some chipotle pepper flakes to give it some spice I'd love to be able to cook more by feel and to make my own recipes!

@MrsH: I tried that once and it was like okay, ~1tbs of soy sauce. 30 ingredients later, another tsp of soy sauce... and another tbs of soy sauce... few more ingredients and a dash of soy sauce. WTF! So we're at how many tbs of soy sauce now????? And that's just with that ingredient. Repeat for vinegar, salt, and fish sauce too. OMG!!! hahaha!

A combination of both, usually the base is from a recipe but I subsitute & add as needed for our family/taste.

Both! if i'm baking, i am to the letter. if i'm making most anything else, i use recipes as a very loose guideline.

Feel/taste, unless I'm baking.
I followed a crock pot recipe to a tee yesterday, when I KNEW I shouldn't have. A tablespoon of cloves?! Way too much. It tasted like potpourri

Definitely by feel! I didn't realize how much I was doing this until DH started trying to make the things I make and the recipes I had originally used didn't work at all.

Feel and taste, but I always end up adding way more garlic. I'm pretty much follow the recipe when baking, unless it's bread or biscuits and I can feel the dough is wrong, then I wing it until it feels right.

@mrsjyw: same as you! Always by feel never recipe unless it is brand new.

Only recently have I started to cook by feel and taste. I love a good recipe though.

Feel and taste, except when I'm baking! I will look at a bunch of recipes to get the feel of how something is supposed to go, though.

I only use recipes when I'm trying something new or if I'm baking.

I will look at a bunch of recipes to see what is going on with them and then tweak. I'm not a great cook though, so this is probably a bad idea lol
