Once right after college, I was dropping friends off near campus after going out (I had sobered up) and thinking it would just be a quick 10 minute drive, I didn't bring my phone, shoes or my wallet. I ran out of gas too far away from my friends, but closer to another friend on the other side of campus. I knocked on his door at 4 AM crying. He was hooking up with a girl in his room, but his roommate answered and walked to the gas station with me and bought me gas.

I have a friend that I text when I'm across the street at the grocery store. I usually give her about 5 min notice. We're on an as-is, no "fake house" basis. She would just ignore my text if she didn't want to let me in.

Never completely unannounced unless it's an emergency or something.

Uhh, I might need to change my answer. I texted Rainbow Sprinkles this morning and we were making plans for me to come by, but my phone died while I was out so I had no way of knowing if the plans were solid or not!!
So I came by. With donuts. She has a newborn. I felt like it was a major friendship crime.

@LovelyPlum: I grew up in an open door house too! Both sets of grandparents, my great-aunt, and my uncle all lived within a mile of me, so we had lots of drop-ins as well as being the drop-byers (making up words). And my sister lives next door to her BIL so lots of unannounced guests there. I agree with you - I do miss the atmosphere of company being in and out.
As an adult, there's no one I do a complete drop by on. I will give short notice texts to my BFF, sister, and ILs though, but that's it.

I don't do unannounced! It stresses me out. My stepmom's house has an open-door policy and it freaks me out because it's sooo different than how my house was! I can't believe people just like, walk in! I know that's how some families are, but mine was so not! I'm making an effort to be a bit more open with mine...but still, gimme some notice, people!

If I were walking by with my son on the way to the playground, or in the car to go to the beach, yes, I might stop by to pick up their kids so they could come with.

No, I never would. But, I wouldn't mind TOO much if someone came by unannounced, but I'd rather it not be a habit. I would prefer they call first.
@HLK208: You can show up on my doorstep with donuts any time.

I wish I had friends close enough to pop by unannounced! But in all honesty, no, I would call/text first.

@mrbee: they were a fresh assortment so I don't think I harmed our friendship...I hope...

Sometimes we do to our next door neighbours! But that's only if we are out for a walk and we literally stop by to say HEY! But, she is a super clean freak, so pretty much any time she could serve dinner off her floor, so I don't think she minds too much We don't do it very often!

I love it when people stop by unannounced! I'm a bit confused why people get so angry about it. I usually call/text first, though.

@HLK208: As long as there were bear claws in there, I'm pretty sure you have complete donut immunity!

@HLK208: @mrbee: LOL @ *donut immunity* . . . and I concur!

Yes, but these are my neighbor friends, not my long-drive-away friends. Otherwise I call and say "I'm in the area, what's up? Can we come over or go out?"

No, I don't. I always call or text. But if someone did it to me, I really wouldn't mind. I'd actually be happy for the company, especially if it was a good friend!

we are really close with our neighbors and do this all the time. other close friends, i would text before, but with short notice if we were in the area. we've had people text us because they were walking by our house to see if we were home and other people just drop in. i grew up in an open house and DH is totally okay with it, so we roll with it, even if the house is a mess! if it's a drop-by though, we try not to stay too long!

@HLK208: you brought doughnuts so I'm sure you were more than welcome!!! Mmmmm

With my fam back home I do it all the time and always have. Sometimes I call/ text right beforehand, but we're just like that. With friends, I usually text and make sure it's ok first, and usually like a heads up when people drop by my house, but I have a couple good friends who I wouldn't mind if they stopped by on a whim (HLK and Rainbow Sprinkles!). My house may not be picked up and I may be in sweats, but friends don't care about that stuff anyway!

This is totally OK with my husband's family and friends - I doubt a day goes by when someone doesn't stop by when we are at the ILs house.
It's also totally OK at my sister's house - most of her friends do it, but we don't because it's a 20 min drive for us. My other sister drops by our house unannounced, but she knows she gets what she gets - dirty house, no one there, whatever.
Anyone else, we would call or text and let them know we were in the area and see if they are available.

No. Everyone lives out of the way that I would call first to make sure they were home.
