Are there any other appliances that you make sure to turn off if you leave?
I have left the house with the dryer on. I know there is a chance a fire could start but I think it's really low. DH turns it off when he leaves.

I do laundry *all* the time b/c we're a cloth diapering family. I basically have no choice but to leave the house in the morning with the dryer on. I always make sure that the lint trap is really clean though!

@skibobrown: Oh, yeah. I always clean the lint trap before I use it. I don't think the DH does.

I make sure everything is turned off. If something is running when I go to bed, my husband usually stays up with it.

all the time! i clean the filter each time i use it, so hopefully there isn't much to catch on fire. there are also 2 sprinklers in our bathroom where our laundry is, so if it were to catch on fire, the alarm would call the fire dept and the sprinklers would turn on, which is exactly what would happen if i were home, so either way the outcome would likely be the same. though i'd prob grab my cat if i were home.

Yep. It does worry me a bit though. I always turn everything else off/unplug kitchen appliances when I'm not using them.

We always leave the dryer on when we leave. We did that in my house growing up and nothing bad ever happened, so I guess I feel pretty confident that things will be ok. There aren't many appliances in our house we actually make sure to turn off when we leave.

We wouldn't have clean clothes if I put such restrictions on our dryer use. lol.

Yup. Never thought twice about it. I wouldn't leave the oven or the iron on though.

Generally we will leave with the dryer running, but if our dog is home alone, we make sure the dryer isn't on. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to him!

All the time!
I do get uneasy leaving the crockpot though which I'm pretty sure is even less likely to cause an issue. (Doesn't stop me from leaving it, I just worry about it sometimes)

@char54: I can't leave the house with the dryer on purely because I worry about our pets and a fire.

I will run the washer, dryer, and dishwasher while we are not hope. But I'm neurotic about unplugging my hair styling tools.

No, mainly because our dog would be home alone. But we leave the dishwasher running.

No, I make sure everything is off before leaving because our dog is crated home alone. No crockpots, toasters plugged in, dyer on or dishwasher going. I couldn't live with myself if something happened to him because of a simple choice I made.

Sometimes I'll leave the washer/dryer and/or dishwasher running.

I do all the time! I feel less safe with leaving the dishwasher on but there is no way I cannot revolve my life around the appliances!

I've never thought twice about leaving the house with the washing machine, dryer or dishwasher on. I also leave a crock pot on. I have also quickly ran out of the house with something cooking in the oven. (My mom would die if she knew that.) But I never leave an open flame on the stove.

Always have, but rethinking it now! Friends of ours had a house fire recently that their dryer started.

No, I am terrified of a fire, especially with our cat home alone. And that's even with an alarm system that ties directly to the fire department. I have fire fear!
A woman in my town actually just died when she went to bed with her dishwasher on and it caught fire. I hadn't actually ever thought about the dishwasher but am much more careful now.
pomelo / 5093 posts
I had no idea people worried about this. I also leave my crockpot running all the time.

No, never the dryer or dishwasher. We've recently had our dryer vent cleaned (from the dryer to the outside of the house), it was packed with lint, a major fire hazard! I've had our dishwasher catch fire before, which is why we bought a Bosch- their heating elements are protected.

No, I always make sure the washer load is done and the dryer is off. I had an issue years ago when the washer kept running for some reason and at the same time, the pipe busted so we came home to a flooded laundry/kitchen area. So I am extra careful now.

Occasionally...I try not to, but sometimes I need to leave before its finished and I find wet clothes sour easily in our machine. I don't worry about the crockpot, but I never realized dishwashers were so prone to catching fire! I mainly end up double-checking the coffee maker because it's really the only electrical thing I use in the morning and I'm not usually at my best before 9am or so.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
I can't. My mom told me a story once about a friend of hers who's dryer caught the house on fire when they were out. She always made us turn it off before leaving. She was paranoid about it and I guess that passed on to me. Lol
