I prefer hardcover. They are pricey, though so I look for gently used hardcovers at consignment sales.

I have only purchased board books so far, wait not true. I have some flap/popup books that are hardcover.

I usually get them hard cover books as well. Do you remove the sleeves and put them away? My kids will immediately rip them off the book and I'm tired of having to put them back on the books all the time.

Both. We mainly borrow books from the library though.

OMG, I fear borrowing books from the library. I hope my son doesn't wreck them like he does his books...I'll never be allowed in there again.

@looch: haha, I have never thought about that. DD is pretty girly and gentle with books!

@Andrea: You are lucky! My son thinks they are balls or something. Tonight he thought it was hilarious that he threw each of his books across the room while we had people over looking at our apartment...parent of the year over here, I tell you.

Most early children's books I've seen don't really have a paperback option, maybe it's just me? Usually when it gets up to the advanced reader ages is when you have a paperback. But I prefer hardcover anyway!

We're still on board book.
So far for books for when she's older I only get free books (Jewish books from the PJ library) or I'll buy $1 books when the library has a sale, either hard or soft cover.

I prefer hardcover. I've been able to find very, very gently used hardcover books at our local secondhand bookstore for just a couple bucks each.

Definitely hardcover, although he is still so rough with the books that I try to stick to board books where I can.

We only have hardcover and board books. I've noticed the same as @ladyfingers: when it comes to kid's books. Hardcover is usually the only option. It does get pricey but they last longer. I hate the covers though!
