I don't mind it. My SIL is a dental hygienist so she usually cleans my teeth, and the dentist she works for is very nice.

Haaaate it. Also because like some others said, I'm genetically screwed. Always have to get cavities filled even though I take good care of my teeth... ugh.

I used to hate the dentist. When I was little I had almost all my baby teeth removed, because the adult ones came up beside them instead of underneath them. I had such bad memories of the needle and the yanking. Then as an adult, I felt constantly harassed by the dentist to have wisdom teeth removed and braces put in. Then I switched dentists and they are very good about making notes about what the patient is like. So when I said I never wanted to hear about braces or wisdom teeth, they put it in my file and I don't hear about it. When I said that I hate the needle, they put it in the file and they treated me with kid gloves when I had to have a filling done. They are awesome.

I love the dentist because she's my best friend! It's just a fun girlie gossip session when I go!

@Smurfette: I know! It is rude! I don't really have a good comeback yet. Luckily, I have just as many patients tell me that I am an awesome dentist, so my self esteem isn't completely shot!

I did before I started seeing my current dentist. I avoided going for several years (after I left my parents' insurance/moved out on my own). I had a horrible experience with a filling in high school because I could feel them drilling into my tooth the whole time and they kept numbing me improperly...then the filling the did fell out after a couple years! I went last May before getting pregnant and got fillings done. It wasn't the greatest (obviously) but it wasn't painful. I didn't feel any worry/dread when we went in January. Luckily I didn't have any cavities this time!

@Mrs. Blue: Same situation here! I always have some issue when i go to the dentist, and i take good care of my teeth. My dad has bad teeth so I must have gotten it from him. Meanwhile dh often forgets to floss, drinks coffee and diet pepsi, and eats tons of sweets and has never had a cavity! His dentist always says "Eat more candy" when dh is leaving his office.

I don't mind, I've had the same dentist since I was a kid so everyone knows me.

I like my dentist. She makes the office and the environment very enjoyable and zen it feels more like you are going in for a spa treatment.

You have to give them a lot of credit too. A very good friend of mine is also a dentist, and she was telling me how difficult it is to have to deal with insurance and how hard it is to do marketing for her services. She is one of those "out of network" dentists because she wants to do good work and spend adequate amount of time, and doesn't want the insurance to tell her what kind of (cheaper) material to use and how much/time she is allowed to spend per procedure. Ends up her business side suffers because as she is not listed, she only has a handful of patients. And it is difficult to do marketing as a dentist. She is considering to become in-network, but she will be working a lot more hours, and she will not be able to have as much time with her son as she is now.

    So... don't hate them

ETA: @Smurfette: if you hate your dentist , I can refer you to my friend's practice and/or my own dentist and you can try it out
