Do you believe fences make good neighbors? Or do you like having open spaces?
I ask because we moved into a house without a fence, and the older kids in the house next door have been an issue at times. They run around in our backyard and I've asked them to stay in their own yard, but I looked outside to find them and their cousins playing football using our newly planted trees as goal posts, grabbing the trees and shaking them. Not cool!

We will definitely have one once we're in a house - mostly for our dog. I think you can see over fences to say hey to neighbors, etc. and keep people out of your space if it isn't too high. I would put one up for sure if I were you, that would drive me nuts!

We do have a fence (in the back). We loved our neighbours until their kids were old enough to play outside. Now they play everywhere, including in my driveway. They like to run up to the house and bang on the big front window, which makes my dogs bark and wake up my baby!!!! We've also caught the neighbour boy peeing under our tree. They also like to pull branches off our tree for swords. I wish my neighbours would keep their kids in their yard. I feel like a jerk telling the kids to get off my yard, but seriously...
In my opinion, good fences make good neighbours.

Not yet, but we will! It's nice having the boundaries in place. You can always invite good neighbors through the gate, but still have the option of keeping not-so-good neighbors out. And they're great for kids and pets.
Sounds like your neighbors could use a fence!

Our house didn't have a fence when we moved in, but it is the first thing we had installed. Mainly for our dogs, but we also like having the boundary in place.

Ugh! I felt like a jerk telling the kids to keep it in their yard because apparently the previous owner let them play here. Their parents never asked us if it was alright! We got an estimate for a fence before we moved in and it was $10k. I wish we had somehow found the money and done it.

Our current home has a front yard wrought iron fence and a back yard fence as well. Our new home has a pool, so a sturdy high fence to the back and no fence in front.

@spaniellove: Ugh. That's a tough situation. Like I said, we have a good relationship with our neighbours, but casual. The kids are still pretty little (6 and 4), and we know they're just kids, but holy cow! I've never said anything outright to the parents.

Our community association is super strict - so although they allow fences, they can't be taller than four feet, and they're all the same design. I love our fence because I can let the dogs out the back door without having to go out myself. Though, there's so much poison ivy in our wooded neighborhood that I don't think anyone would want to run yard to yard.

We have a six ft wooden privacy fence in our backyard. It was on our must-have list when we were house hunting, mainly because of our dog. We have good relationships with the neighbors on our street, don't know the ones behind us though. I like the privacy it gives us in the backyard.
Sounds like you need to have a talk with your neighbors! They should respect the property lines.

A fence was a must for us, we have 2 dogs that need space to run without being a menace to the rest of the neighborhood. I firmly believe that good fences make good neighbors!!

We don't have a fence, but we have a hedge. It's huge and wraps around the yard. Those neighborhood kids sound like little thugs! Messing with newly planted trees is no joke! I'd booby trap around them!

We don't have a fence but I wish we did! Too bad it's so expensive. They just built a house right behind us so we are totally lacking any privacy

I'm pretty sure everyone in our neighborhood has a fence, it's the norm here. It was a must for us because we have a dog who likes to escape. Most people around here have dogs.
I think if a fence will keep you from hating your neighbors, you should get one.

Yes we have fences around our entire property and so do all of our neighbors. Most of our neighbors have dogs so I'm glad there is a fence since I'm terrified of dogs!

We do not have a fence & it is actually against community rules unless your fence is grandfathered in! You can have invisible fences for dogs. Luckily, our yard is a decent size & the houses are quite spread out.

@spaniellove: Btw- we recently replaced one side that was rotting and split the cost with our neighbor. Could you approach the neighbor and see if they are willing to share the cost with you?

@sunny: I think our neighbor is against having a fence! We asked the previous owner about the idea of us getting a fence and he mentioned that he never got one and the neighbor liked using the yard for his kids. When we had the property surveyed for a fence before the sale closed, the neighbor went and removed the tiny boundary markers within 24 hours!

@spaniellove: maybe you need to borrow a dog... your neighbor might change their mind if the kids start stepping in poop everyday!

we have a fence because we have an underground pool so its the insurance's rules. I plan to take the fence down and make a "fence" out of trees which would be OK with our insurance policy but it takes a long time ebcause trees don't grow very fast.
We never communicate with one neighbor and its not because of the fence: they are not home much and they have never even said hi. weird...
The other neighbor and us are good friends despite the fence....I do like having the privacy there when we want it.
