Yup, in our current house we have flowers (roses, hibiscus, lilies, etc) and we also have a pretty big vegetable garden. There is NOTHING like vegetables from your own garden!

At the new house we won't start landscaping/gardening till next season. Bu we'll definitely be building a decent size vegetable garden. We plan to till the soil and begin composting etc this year. We LOVE zucchini and squash but at this current house it just won't grow so we're hoping at the new house it will take!

Sort of have a garden. I don’t have a green thumb at all, but I want to garden! We also only have a big patio and no real yard, so that limits what we can grow. We grow cooking herbs (basil, thyme, spring onions, chives, rosemary, mint, and something else I think) and then we grow jalapeno peppers and tomatoes in containers on the patio. I tried peas once, but they didn’t really work, and I tried sweet peppers but only got 1 green pepper that was teeny – that was my whole summer bounty!

The patio gets full sun all day, so tomatoes grow really well. The rest of my attempts are hit or miss.

There are tons of flowers and plants in our front yard, but that's only because our downstairs neighbor tends to that garden and has a green thumb!!

At the current house green/red/yellow/orange peppers do really well and so do beef steak and cherry tomatoes. We also plant a lot of different varieties of hot peppers. Those are our standards. In years past we have tried watermelon, pickling cucumbers, carrots, radish. this last season we started growing beans & chinese water spinach. I'm excited to try baby bok choy next season when the garden at our new house is ready!

FYI if pests are an issue dill works really well to keep them away. And herbs do really well in window boxes. We also started growing them with our aerograden indoors so we have fresh herbs all year long!

The house we're moving back to we have flowers out front and on the one side of the house. I made a trellis of morning glories a few times but those suckers are heavy they'd always knock the trellis over. Along the other side of the yard we have a veggie and herb gardens.

@artbee: We're moving back to the house we own, so we planted a lot of the flowers years ago there, when I visited last year the people living there weren't really taming the garden so it was wild to see how much everything grew in the years we were gone. We had to move away for a few years and made a garden up here but the soil here was never quite as good.

@artbee: Tomatoes grow nicely in containers, so you could still do that even if you extended your deck, so not to take up more yard space. We got so lucky with our downstairs neighbors. Its just us and them in our condo association, and they are both super handy (we are not), and love to garden! I will miss them when we move.

Yes! We've had a raised bed vegetable garden for the past two years with potted herbs on the deck. We also spent a lot of time on the flower gardens at our old house in New York, so we even brought some of the the flowers with us to our new rental in Wisconsin when we moved last fall. I'm so excited that everything we brought seems to have survived the winter and is coming up this spring.

We were fortunate enough to buy a house with tons of plants and trees, the original owner was a builder and had landscaping friends. Although we didn't see any of it when we bought the place during winter, imagine our surprise when we found a jungle when we moved in! The previous owner didn't take care of anything so we had a crash coarse in gardening our first summer here!

We have a large Robinia that I absolutely adore! It's filled with white flowers during the summer that smells like sweetpeas. There's also a crabapple tree, cherry tree, apple tree, elderberry tree, a little magnolia, jasmine trees, a spindle tree, a line of little beach trees.

As for bushes: a line of lilacs, a Korean spicebush, a few Magic Carpet Spireas, peonies (one of my faves), an azalea, rhodadendrums, our hedge is a sugarplum bush (Amelanchier).

There's a ton of different flowers that were scattered everywhere (even in the gravel path) so I had to transplant a bunch of them. My faves are: the Columbines, bleeding hearts, a clematis vine.

All those came with the house but we transplanted a lot of it. A few things we planted ourselves (hopefully they live): a Reine Claude plum tree, a bunch of tulips, tete-a-tetes, heucheras, spring snowfakes (Leucojum vernum from seed).

What we have planned for this spring: sweetpeas (love them), heirloom tomatoes, lettuce, chili peppers, snowpeas, and sunchokes.

We typically do a spring veggie garden, but I'm super pregnant this year, so we decided against it. Besides the fact I can't bend over much anymore, I also use chicken poop, which is on the no-no list. But we do have citrus trees, blackberries and blueberries that pretty much take care of themselves. I always have herb pots going, as well. I have a decent butterfly garden on the side of the house that's fairly well established, so it doesn't take much to get it back going after winter, as well.
