@mediagirl: I saw something about that technique, and I really liked it... but I actually need to start using it. The only thing we've done so far is tell her to say "excuse me" when she wants to say something when other people are talking... so she says it repeatedly until we acknowledge her

I teach Montessori preschool & the hand technique is what we use in school, so it's what we do with our 3 year old. I usually put my hand on his or else acknowledge him non-verbally in some way to let him know I'll be right with him. For when he can't physically reach us (like dinner or in the car), we use "excuse me please", but he mostly just launches right into whatever he wants to say after like 3 seconds!
