My dog shares the same first name with DH's uncle/MIL's youngest brother. MIL named both of them.
DH's favorite girl's name is his cousin's name! She lives in another country right now so maybe it isn't a big deal.

Nope, I wouldn't do the same name as someone we were close with/saw regularly. LO's name is the same as a distant family member though (my dad's cousin's son's grandson! We never see them).

On my DH's side, cousins share names with uncles.
ETA: and DH's cousin named their child my (nick)name because they really liked it. I didn't think it was weird at all!

No, we're avoiding names that belong to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins!
Now my cousins' children on the other hand... that's probably fair game.

Not first names, no. Evan does share a middle name with one of his uncles, and one of his cousins has Evans as a middle name, but they are both family names.
One of my nephews shares a unique (but not family) name with my cousin's child--I guess his second cousin? I always get confused after first cousins, lol. I don't think they've ever even met, though.

Only if it was an extremely important family name. DD shares a middle name with my cousin's daughter. Several other cousins have said their kids will likely have the same middle name. It's have to be very special to me to duplicate first names though.

2 of my cousins on my dad's side have the same middle name as my brothers first name(my brother was the 3rd one born), but it is in tribute of my dad and his siblings brother who (along with their mother) died during childbirth.

No, but there's only one cousin who named his child a name I actually like- Ariana. The name is spelled and pronounced slightly different than the Ariana I grew up with, but it's still the same name.

My dog's name (Hannah) is my husbands last name (Hanna) which cracked me up when we started dating. I didn't change my name when we got married so I don't match her name. I guess it depends on how much you love the name and if you like the person with the name!

My little sister has the same name as one of my aunts. No one seems to mind, but we do have to clarify with aunt or sister sometimes when we are talking.

I named LO the same name as my cousin. There's about a 24 year age gap and we rarely see him so yup I would.
Plus it's the only name DH and I could agree on.

I probably wouldn't... I am tempted by a few of my nephews' names though. That particular BIL has similar taste as us I think because they warned us their girl pick was very, very similar to our LO's name. They won't tell us what it is though!

Yes! DH has over 100 first cousins. I don't think any of their kids share a name (yet) but I already told him if I liked a name the fact that one of their kids has it won't stop me from using it. Just like I wouldn't care if one of them used a name we have.

DH and I picked out a girl name we LOVE years ago and when SIL got pregnant before us, I asked DH if we'd still use the name we picked if SIL used it. He said yes! I was for using it too, even if it was a duplicate lol. We all had boys so it was a moot point!

Probably not haha, I didn't even want to give my daughter the name Lucy when we were looking for "Lu" names because it is my SIL's cat's name

No. I would avoid repeating names of aunts, uncles, first cousins, and cousins' kids. Fortunately for us we're not that enamored with any of our relatives' names anyway.
For grandparents and great-grandparents on the other hand, we've got most of those names on the list for a middle name.

If DH and I ever have a son we are naming him Samuel. I have an uncle named Sammy and one off friend's dogs is named Sammy, but that's not stopping us from using the name. If the name was used more recently in my family we wouldn't use it. For example if my cousin had a child named Sammy. We don't plan on using Sammy or Sam as nicknames. We'd like for him to be called Samuel.

Not if we regularly saw them. I love my cousin's wife's name but would never use it because I think it would be weird. We wouldn't be "honoring her" or anything and it might come off that way. I also LOVE the name of DH's cousin's little boy but he was our ring bearer and that would be weird too.

The only names I would avoid would be the same name as my nieces/nephew (LO's 1st cousins). All else is fair game.
ETA: My mom's cousin named her daughter the same as me and I loved that growing up. DS actually has the same name as DH's cousin's much older son. And they loved it too.

I would, definitely. Even if my brother's kids had the name. I was all worried about someone "stealing" our name during pregnancy and then kinda came to the realization that it's not that weird to share a name with someone else. I had tons of friends with my name as a kid. Having a cousin wouldn't have been any weirder. I'd probably avoid naming siblings (even half/step siblings) the same thing, though. That might be too much.

I don't think it's a big deal. But I also prefer traditional names.
My brother has a daughter with a variation of my first name (Maire), another with a variation of my first name as a middle name (Marie) and a son who's first name is my middle name
Honestly, I'm flattered!
If we have a son, it would be named after DH (he's a junior), and if we have a girl, it would most likely be named after his grandmother and about a million women in my family.

We avoided family names because I didn't want someone thinking we named LO after that family member for a specific reason. DH & I both have a lot of uncles we aren't crazy about. They all have classic guys names so we felt there were a lot of names taken off the table. I wouldn't mind two cousins being named after a beloved grandparent.

I don't know if it's an Indian culture thing or specific to my family, but we consider it bad luck to name your child after a living relative. It's essentially like putting a death wish on the older relative (I think....).
