Nope! Just log off! Or sometimes just lock it. If I had to turn it on every morning, I'd be wasting 15 minutes every day!

@locavore_mama: Do you know WHY they make you do that? Most computers these days are pretty efficient and will just go into sleep mode when not in use, so I can't imagine they're using THAT much energy to keep on all night! I think it would cost them more to pay you while you're waiting for the darn thing to turn on!

Nope, I just log off. They actually don't want you to shut down, so when they run updates overnight, your computer will be updated.

@Adira: I think there are two schools of thoughts. One is what you & I believe. And the other is it's better, save energy to shut it off at night. At my old job we would always just log off because our IT guy believed it didn't take much energy. And he did a lot of updates & maintenance at night remotely too.

Oh, @Smurfette makes a good point - our IT pushes updates and security patches at night too, so they want us to leave them on.
@locavore_mama: I suspect that's the old school of thinking - that it wastes energy to just keep them on. But computer now-a-days are really efficient, so I wouldn't think it would waste that much. I would think it would take MORE energy to power-up than just keep it running. What a pain for you!

@Adira: I totally agree! We even just outsourced our IT (our IT guy moved away) to a company and they still want us to shut down every night except Friday when they run updates and maintenance. So weird.

@locavore_mama: Wait - so they want you to turn it off every night and have to turn it back on in the morning EXCEPT over the weekend they want you to just leave it running ALL WEEKEND??? That's ridiculous. If anything, it would make more sense to do the OPPOSITE - leave it on during the week and they can push their updates through then, and then power down for the weekend and have to turn it back on on Monday! Your IT is weird.

@locavore_mama: What would they do if your just left it on one night?
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Adira: shhh that's what I was doing up until they posted a "official" notice on our main announcement page.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@locavore_mama: hahahaha! They probably posted that announcement because of YOU!

We have to, but we have laptops and they have to be locked up or taken home every night.

I shut it down when I leave for the night. My computer starts up really fast at work so it's not a pain for me.

I always turn my machine off at night unless I'm running a backup. My computer boots in like 10 seconds though.

Nope. Sometimes I have to restart it when it gets funky after being on too long.

My old computer I had to. If I left it running all night it would function as well as a turtle in peanut butter the next day. Now that I got a new one all I have to do is lock it!

I don't have to but I always do it since I never know when I will be back in the office.

Most of the time I shut down, sometimes if I'm busy or have something I need to remember to work on in the morning I'll just lock it and shut off my monitor.

We have to log out. We never shut down because they do maintenance on off hours and I can log in from home if need be.
In fact my computer starts beeping if I turn it off and on.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
We're not allowed to shut down because they install updates and stuff at night, and can't do that if the computers are off.
