I have gotten the exact opposite. "Are you sure you are pregnant?" At one point I was feeling especially bitchy and hormonal so I profered up a "Want me to vomit on you like I have been doing all day to prove it?"

Not my finest moment but sometimes people deserve it.

@swedishfish: I'm so sorry for your loss. Sadly people's rudeness never ceases to amaze me. Knowing me and my sass if someone really irked me and kept pushing "are you suuuuure there isn't twins in there" I could totally see snapping back in the wrong moment with a "actually I was having twins and lost one - so yes I am sure there is only one" and make them feel like a complete you know what!

I was absolutely huge even early on and there was a possibility early on I had a m/c of a twin or a very large sch, I will never know. I would get the twin comment constantly and I just grinned and bared it even though I wanted to punch the person saying it because its so incredibly rude..hard to take the higher road. It will always be hard especially when I met someone the other day who is pregnant with twins, I feel just a twinge of guilt.

I'm so sorry for your loss, and your situation makes this already annoying phrase even more difficult to cope with.

Honestly, I'd would just answer with the typical "No, just one" and if someone does it more than once or persists with "Well it sure looks like twins, are you sure?" I think it's completely appropriate to reply "Well it was, but we lost one baby." Only if that's something you are comfortable with sharing though.

People need to be taught a lesson - it's a rude question anyway, designed to make people feel bad, and they should really stop saying it anyway. Maybe you'll be the one to teach them to be more sensitive in general when asking questions of pregnant women.
