Or do you let them open as they roll in?
I usually let them have gifts when they arrive, but I think I need to chills and wait to let them open.

Xander just turned one and so we opened all his gifts at his party (the weekend after his birthday). In the future, we'll probably save gifts to open on his actual birthday (unless we're WITH the person the gift is from - then we'll have him open it immediately so the gifter can see his reaction and receive a thank you on the spot)

with ds we 'opened' them as they rolled in, DH and I bought him a cpl toys on his actual bday, and then he had a huge bday bash where he opened gifts.
in the future, we will probably do the same! (sans the huge bday bash)

I give her a few on her bday and save the rest to give her throughout the year.

Although we did get one gift a like a month early and we did let her read the book early.

@Andrea: ditto! especially since his birthday is right before Christmas, and we can't really stop him from opening Christmas gifts on Christmas day or when family comes over. So we take the gifts home from the party, pre-open them and choose a couple for him to open that week, then we store them away to open gradually throughout the rest of the year.
