Do you keep firearms in your house? I live in Texas...so it's definitely not unusual. Where I grew up, we definitely didn't keep any guns, as I lived in a large city and hunting wasn't big. But, where I live now-it's common for men to be raised knowing how to hunt and use guns safely as well.
I'm not worried yet, but with the amount of guns we keep in the house, I was wondering how many people also keep guns in their house and at what age we should get a gun safe.

Yes. We have a gun safe and for sure no one but me and DH could get into it. My parents have a gun safe as well and we couldn't get into it if we wanted to.

Not at the moment. If we did, it would be for hunting and we'd have a gun safe as soon as we bought the gun. I don't believe in them for safety since I read somewhere a while ago that people who live in households with guns are more likely to die by gunshot than those who didn't. So overall they wouldn't improve safety.

Yep, I have my ex husbands glock (fought for in court to protect myself against him) my husband has hunting rifles. I have my concealed weapons permit too. I grew up with guns, my parents are avid hunters. Gun safes and safety locks are a must.

Yep, kept safely in a biometric safe in a closet in our room. DH wants to have something built into the wall and covered up so that there are NO issues about kids sneaking around and accessing, etc.

Yes we have quite a few guns in our house. We don't have a gun safe because if we ever need a gun (if someone breaks in, etc) they aren't going to wait for us to open the safe. We keep them scattered throughout the house, but completley hidden and with saftey on, not loaded (but clip next to). My neice comes over very often and we never worry about them, when we have a child they're very much going to know gun safety. They worst thing you can do is be afraid of a gun

What terrifies me is the amount of people that do not use a gun safe. Weapons just laying around is irresponsible no matter how you justify it.

@looch: I'm not sure that it's irresponsible to not have a gun safe? It's actually kind of stupid if you have a gun for protection to keep your only one in a safe Shotguns and such should go in a safe, but a handgun does you NO good locked behind a passcode. Parent's who don't pay attention to their children, or don't teach their children about gun safety or leave them sitting where a child can reach them or find them are irresponsible.
ETA- I just re-read that and don't mean to be hateful but I don't know how else to word it, so don't think i'm being mean lol!

We have a few. I think DH has a shot gun, a rifle, a pellet gun (which really doesnt count!) and this weekend he is going out to buy a hand gun.
We had a garage break in down the block 2 days ago, and it scared me. I want to be protected. DH works nights on the weekends, and I hate being alone in our house. I want to feel protected in case anything would happen.

@MrsTiz: @looch: I agree with MrsTiz....if you teach children about guns growing up, they will know better. I grew up and my dad always had guns. They were also out of sight, but even as a kid I always knew where they were. I would have never even thought to touch it though, I had no use. Plus I wasn't curious about it, but because my dad showed it to me, and we talked about how it's dangerous. I plan on doing that with our children. Plus the guns were never loaded.

@MrsTiz: I don't think your post is hateful, no worries. what worries me tremendously is stolen guns. If some one comes into your home and steals those guns, they end up on the street possibly in the hands of people that don't know how to use them and shouldn't have them. Please consider that.

We have a handgun and a shotgun which currently are not in a safe. We plan to put them in one once we conceive.

No, and we never will. My younger brother killed himself with the gun my dad bought for protection. There will never be a gun in my house.

@looch: good point! They would never find them though, they're hidden in rather strange places, not your typical sock drawer/under the mattress lol I hadn't thought about that, most people around here already have guns though, so you don't want to be caught without one!

DH has a rifle and a shot gun. Right now they are not in a safe...but we also do not have ammo for them. DH hunted growning up and thats what they were for. Now they are too small for him, but would fit me perfectly.
Once we concieve they are going away until we are in the position to have a safe. My Uncle is with the guard, and has offered to store them for us in his gun safe.

No we don't have any. My husband wants us to get one. I don't think I'm very comfortable with it. I could never use it against anyone. Being on the wrong end of a gun scarred me for sure.

Yes, we have hunting guns (rifles, shotgun, muzzle loader) but they are all locked in a safe.
I grew up around them, my dad is a gun collector but we always knew they were off limits and he never keep the ammo with the guns (different safe.) We were taught gun safety at a very young age and always knew they were not a toy, my children will be taught the same and take an education class as soon as they are old enough. I don't mess around with this. I have seen/heard of too many tragedies caused by lack of knowledge.

I think I've posted the seminal public health paper on firearms in the home here before.... But a wonderful study from my last institution showed that firearms in the home were 2xs (or 100%) more likely to be used on a family member than an intruder. I saw it all the time when I worked in a regional trauma center.... The 4 year old shoots the two year old etc.
Once you realize that gun violence and tragedy can befall good, well- intentioned gun owning families in the blink of an eye it really changes your perspective.

@Mrs. Jacks: yes i heard this too that often times a gun in the home is used either against the gun owner or his/her family member more often than it is used against an intruder

@mrsjacks surely the study was done if the guns weren't locked up or in a safe? I can't imagine keeping firearms in our home even unloaded and not having a gun lock on them or in a safe.

We have one gun. My parents never had guns when I was growing up, so I wasn't a fan at first. My husband's older brother is a police officer, so he's gone with him to shooting ranges a ton of times and is really comfortable with guns.

No, we're not comfortable with it. DH was in the Army, and scored consistently at the top of his unit in shooting, but I've never held a real gun, so I most definitely don't want one in the house.
If there's a time where we feel we need on for our family's protection we'll revisit the topic, but only after I've had extensive training with one.

Definitely not. I would constantly be paranoid about little curious hands stumbling across them.
I'm from Canada though, where owning guns for non-hunting purposes is very, very low and not the norm at all.

I grew up around guns and feel very comfortable with them, and DH grew up in a military family, but neither of us are comfortable having them in our own house.
Growing up, my dad kept all of his guns in a locked safe in a locked shed in the backyard, so they really weren't accessible.
