One of my friends told me that she actively made the choice to not take prenatals during her pregnancy. I thought it was odd to hear.
All of her kids are normal/healthy as far as I can tell.

I was pretty good about taking them during the first trimester... after that I took them when I remembered. My OB wasn't concerned. They made me really constipated if I took them 7 days in a row.

I will never forget one of our friends reading the other the riot act because she could not keep down her prenatals due to HG. The bad part was that the friend reading the riot act smoked her whole pregnancy.
I'm not sure why someone would purposefully not take them. I feel that its a risk I'm not willing take by not taking them, but if I forget, I don't' feel like the world is ending.

Not really.
I didn't in the first trimester because I could not get them down. They are huge and had a funny taste. You'd think someone would invent one that is pleasant to take, esp. for the first tri! Instead I took a chewable regular vitamin, plus a folic acid supplement. The folic acid pill was tiny, so no problems there.

My best friend I think stopped taking them after the first trimester, but mostly because she'd forget to take them, not because she actively chose not to.

It seems very odd to me that someone would actively choose not to take them without a real reason. In my first pregnancy I was somewhat sporadic because they made me feel even worse than I already did. This time I'm taking gummie prenatals and they are much easier to get down.

My sister chose not to because she couldn't find one that didn't make her feel sick...she had 5 kids and they are all healthy. Not a choice I would make but it seems have worked out okay so far for her.

My Ob did not actually, she said she just took folica acid in her first tri.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: try Citranatal! They are gel caps and whatever the coating is, it's kind of yummy. There are definitely huge though.

I was terrible at taking them. Absolutely terrible. I bought a 60 day supply in my first trimester and had a good half of the bottle left when I delivered. Now the proud parent of a healthy, happy, (almost) 3 year old.

Ever since week 6 whenever I take one it just comes right back up, so I stopped taking them. However, I have been taking Flintstones gummies. They taste yummy and stay down. Yay!

I have a friend who didn't really take them for most of her pregnancy. I think she had problems swallowing pills, then her doctor kind of yelled/encouraged her. I think eventually she found gummy ones and was ok with those. I took the gummy ones my whole pregnancy and never had an issue with them.

My friend's mom was homeless and when she knew she was pregnant she just "drank more milk" - never saw a doctor!!! My friend is healthy too! But granted that was the 80's. I don't know anyone who hasn't but I'm sure lots of moms have best intentions and forget often!

My midwife told me that prenatals are mostly for the benefit of the mother, because the fetus is taking the nutrients they need from the mother. She said extra folic acid, iron, and DHA are great, especially if you can get enough through your diet, but that a lot of pregnant women don't, and that's why she encourages taking them.
I take them. Last pregnancy my food intake was awful...I could pretty much only eat peanut butter sandwiches.

I have been too nauseous this pregnancy to take them most of the time, but luckily one of my safe foods is cereal and most are fortified with Folic Acid (the most important thing in a prenatal). Tons of cereals have 100% of the folic acid you need in 1 serving, and I always eat more than 1 serving.
I have a friend with HG who wasn't able to take them at all throughout her pregnancy.

If you're confident in your diet it's fine not to take them, especially after the first trimester.

I make sure to get the recommended dosage of folic acid each day through my diet, so I don't worry about it otherwise.

My mom didn't when she was pregnant with me! She tells me that she also ate horribly - lots of fast food. I turned out okay!

@Madison43: Yes to the coating tasting yummy! I thought I was crazy for liking when the actual vitamin (not the DHA gelcap) dissolved a little. Very tasty!

I didn't take them when I couldn't keep anything down. I think Mrs. Avocado from weddingbee/That Wife intentionally didn't take them if I remember correctly (I used to be obsessed with a number of blogs. So embarrassing). She has two really beautiful, healthy kids, so it obviously worked out for her.

I tried to, but mostly didn't, because I puked them up immediately.

Most people who skip them will be just fine, the biggest risk is from a lack of folic acid, which can cause spinal cord defects. In America, flour and bread is fortified with folic acid, so if you eat that, it's easy to get the amount you need.

No, but I did switch to a gummy with DHA/frolic acid and no iron because my other one was making me sick

I didn't my first pregnsncy. I have a bladder condition where I had to be on a specific diet and couldn't tolerate the ascorbic acid in them. I took folic acid, but that is more important to take before you get pregnant anyway.

I haven't been great about it this pregnancy because I have stomach issues and it's not the easiest thing to take, plus I've been on so many other things sometimes I just plain forget. This thread is pretty reassuring though. I rarely forgot with my first pregnancy.
