@Mrs. J: Oh, yes, it's definitely about the machine, not the actual frozen treat. Something about how they cannot proper clean the machine to guarantee they are getting rid of any potential bacteria or something.

@Anagram: I have always wondered this too. When I was receiving chemo, I was told to not only avoid deli meats, but also produce unless I cleaned it carefully at home. Meaning, even for cantaloup there is a big risk because if the outer skin is bad and you cut in, the knife carries that bacteria into the fruit. I had to hand wash and clean all lettuce too.
Also, I was told to avoid condiment containers that sit on tables at restaurants. I had to ask for single serving containers.
