I was reading an article which said that the music we listened to from 12-17 years old is music we listen to for the rest of our lives.
Is that true for you?

That is interesting! Yes, I would listen to my same mixed tapes over and over if I could find some!

Ace of Base and NSync? I don't think so. Haha I was a little younger for Ace of Base actually. Still enjoy NSync every once in a while. I mostly listen to music my parents raised me on such as Loggins and Messina and classic rock mixed with some country.

I love the music I grew up with... 50s/60s with my dad, disco with my step mom, country with my mom... and then 90's grunge/alternative that I loved. I think these are my favorites because I have specific memories about songs or bands whereas newer music I don't really connect anything too.

Absolutely, Motown and 90's R&B will always be my favourite music.

Yes and no. I still really love some of the music from my teen years, but mostly for nostalgic reasons. But I listen to it far far less than newer music. I think there's quite a bit of music that's come out in the past few years that I'll listen to for a long time.
Except for Foo Fighters. I've listened to them since I was 12 and will always listen to them. My love for Dave Grohl runs deep.

Not really. I listen to current hits on the radio (pop) and country now. Every once in a while I'll turn it to the 90's station on Sirius XM but only for a little bit. But a good portion of that time I listened to a lot of hard core rap, and I most definitely do not listen to rap anymore!

@mrbee: Loggins and Messina and classic rock - yes. The country I picked up in college which is close to 17 years old!

Yes and no. I'll turn it up if a song from my teen years come on, but I don't intentionally listen to that music.

@mrbee: wow, interesting! do you happen to have a link to that article? I think for me it would be more like 14-21 or so (HS and college) but I definitely still listen to that music.

@Shutterbug: It's only mentioned in passing... but here it is!

I would enjoy it if it randomly came on the radio, like a one-off flashback. But generally no, I don't go out of my way to listen to anything from my teen years, I pretty much only listen to current music.

LOL! I shudder at the thought. There was some good stuff in the 90s that I still enjoy, but I can't imagine not evolving my music tastes continuously. That sounds so sad and limiting.

@sarac: It's less about whether or not you evolve your musical tastes, and more about the emotional connections that we make with music in our formative years...

Noooooo way. I was sooo into teen pop and that stuff annoys me now! Also I grew up in the 90's and that was an atrocious decade for music IMO.

@mrbee: Oh, well then sure. There was some really meaningful music in my life at that age. But it's more a fun memory than the stuff I listen to daily now.

Some of it, yes! I love hearing songs that I listened to in the 90s, it brings back memories! Definitely understand the emotional connection that @mrbee mentioned.
Mariah Carey, Hansen, Boys 2 Men, Sarah McLachlan, along with some 80s new wave... and I also had the Les Mis and Phantom soundtracks on constant repeat!
