I make them. I bought one for my oldest son's third birthday party. I was having my daughter the next week and just couldn't get everything together.

For N's first birthday we made a cake for him to smash and ordered cake for everyone else.
For his second birthday we made one and bought one. Both gluten and dairy free.
For E's first birthday we will likely do the same.

Buy. I do like to try and make my own stuff but don't really feel like messing around with a cake.

I've bought them so far just to avoid the stress. When we're having smaller groups I'll probably make them

I made DS's 1st birthday cake and want to continue doing this.
When I was little my mum had a children's cake book and me and my sisters got to choose a cake out of it every year for our birthdays. There was a huge choice:cartoon characters, sports related, hobby related etc it was so much fun choosing so I want to do the same with my children.
This is DS's cake from June that I made.

My friend usually provides cupcakes, and they are so yummy. For DS2's birthday I ended up making him special carrot cake (gf, vegan, nut and soy free) due to allergies. We bought a Costco cake for everyone else. I wasn't willing to spend $75+ on a cake that he couldn't eat, and the Costco cake was a hit for my hard to please crowd.

I made it. We didn't have a cake for everyone else. They had monkey cupcakes.

I make by default, but if D says he wants a store bought one, I'll get it.
I'm gonna make M's first cake.

I made her first birthday cake and really wanted to buy one this year, but a peanut free bakery cake was ridiculously over-priced so I ended up making this year's too!

Make! The first year I was overwhelmed and bought one, but I make cakes all the time just because, and made 4 for oldest DD's 2nd bday! I plan on making one or more for DD2's birthday in a couple of months, too.
In the pic: the green one was GF banana, the purple one was chocolate (her 2 favorite colors), the sprinkles one was funfetti, and the chocolate frosted one was yellow cake. No cake mixes or canned frosting (except for the GF cake) because I'm crazy like that.

Buy! Well, my mom buys.
Her good friend owns a wedding/party cake business, and gives my mom an awesome deal. She makes the best almond cake. I could never replicate it!

My second daughter just had her first birthday. I made her smash cake and bought a costco cake for everyone else. That chocolate sheet cake is my favorite cake ever!
ETA! Ahh! You can hardly see the cakes in that pic! Back cake is a sheet cake. Here's her smash. Super simple (I'm no baker).
And for older DD, I made all cake and cupcakes from scratch for all 75 people at her first birthday. That was totally insane, so I decided to buy a costco cake and make a smash cake from scratch for her second birthday (where I got the idea for my second daughter).
Here are the cakes she had:

@PrincessBaby: I love this! Will be saving this as inspiration for next year as LO loves Mickey & Minnie
We bought ours...

@illumina: that's adorable! My LO would love that cake!
We made LO her first cake with coconut flour, banana, greek yogurt for frosting... DH actually made it and it was really good! Not too fancy but it worked!

My friend made B's cake this year. I made it last year, but she has way more talent!

I baked it. I'm not a spectacular baker, by any means, but I was so proud of the cake I made! It was a chocolate quinoa cake with coconut cream frosting! And it was SO DELICIOUS.
ETA: There is a 96% likeliness that I will not be doing the same next year.
