Unless I'm in the Caribbean or Hawaii, I prefer lakes! New England ocean is way too damn cold!!!

For sitting by- ocean. I love the salty air and the breeze and the sound of waves. For swimming- lake. No waves to deal with and usually warmer- New England ocean swimming is cold!
I don't think I've ever swam in a river! Sounds lovely though.

@looch: @Madison43: lol - what's wrong with lakes??
@Foodnerd81: River swimming in New England is COLD, like the ocean! The water's usually flowing down from the mountains.

I don't like lakes either!
I don't like how they smell and I'm freaked out that you can't see the bottom of them.. and the sand is usually dirty.

I'm 100% a beach/ocean girl. I could never move far away from a coast. I love swimming in waves, relaxing on the beach, boating in bays, etc.

@Adira: everything! Dark, still water and a childhood full of horror movies I imagine
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Madison43: hahaha, I didn't really watch horror movies until I was an adult and I grew up swimming in lakes, so maybe that's why they don't bother me.

How about pool, haha?
Not a big fan of swimming unless the water is warm and clear-ish.

The ocean! Though the spring-fed, crystal-clear rivers of Florida are a close second. I used to adore lakes, but they get so disgusting and hot in the summer here, that by the middle of summer, most of us won't go in them anymore.

I love the ocean but in the PNW it's too cold for swimming. We spend time out on the river boating as much as we can.

I loved them all Ocean for sitting by/walking along the shore, lake for swimming, and river for rowing...

I voted river because I live next to a small one and LOVE canoeing and tubing every summer.
If I'm going on vaca though... it'd be ocean, can't get over that view.

OCEAN!
Add me to the list of people who find lakes scary. And I've just never even heard of people swimming in/sitting by a river.

All the rivers and lakes I've been to have been murky and dirty, so I prefer the ocean. Plus, I get anxious about snakes in rivers.

@Truth Bombs: I grew up in upstate NY along the Hudson river and there were beaches along the river!

Okay I love me the ocean, but lets be honest I'm in Nebraska, so it doesn't happen. So for local I prefer river than lake. (Our river is sand bottom and so clear, I love it. We float down it and it's just relaxing!) The lakes are a little more murky but if you have a boat it's not bad.

@Truth Bombs: you haven't done a real lazy river float? Find a bend in the river so you don't have to walk far back to your car. Everyone has a tube, including the dogs, beer and snacks. And relax on down the river.

@Truth Bombs: you need to get to Switzerland! There is a whole weekend culture around tubing in rivers.

@travellingbee: @Maysprout: @looch: Geez I guess I need to become more familiar with rivers! I grew up in Boston where our river inspired the song "Love that Dirty Water"

@Truth Bombs: haha same! The idea of swimming in a river makes me want to put a hazmat suit on.

Lakes. Ocean is too cold, and the only river around here is a complete party spot and totally gross. Lol

Ocean, no question! And I don't think the ocean is too cold in new England at all. In the late summer it is actually really warm! I'll do rivers too but not lakes. The leeches freak me out!
pomegranate / 3393 posts
I think of lakes as filled with creepy and slimy things. I don't think of rivers as good for swimming or relaxing. So ocean wins!
honeydew / 7235 posts
100 % ocean!!! We live near the ocean and both grew up at the ocean, I couldn't imagine not living near it.
Most lakes are kinda gross to me (lake winnepesauke, huge lake is the exception)

Lake is my preference...probably because I grew up spending summers at the lake house and now as an adult also spend summers at our lake house. I also love the ocean since it's so close to us.
I'm really surprised so many people are freaked out by lakes! Never in a million years would I have expected people to hate them!

@Truth Bombs: he he, here people (me included) swim in the Danube. But it's really clean and the part we swim in is completely closed to motor boats. There are also some city beaches along the banks.
Oceans are my first choice.

pools, then oceans.... forget lakes - all the ones i've been in are either cedar lakes that stain everything or are so slimy i skeeve touching anything. I know a lot of people that go tubing in the Delaware river or do triathlons in the
Schuylkill River in Philly but i feel like you'd come out like Blinky the fish from the Simpsons with 3 eyes
Plus at this point I've seen way too many episodes of River Monsters

I have the weirdest/worst anxiety about swimming where I can't see the bottom. So, I chose ocean, because if I'm not really swimming, at least I'll have a beautiful view.

@Chillybear: River Monsters! Yes! Such a good show....but has ruined water for me haha.
