Oh no! I do say this this to her. For instance she is soooo close to crawling so when she lunges forward or moves a knee up I clap and say "good girl!" Or "way to go E!" Or "you're so strong!"

I totally see your point though. I think when she's older I may use different wording but at 7 months I think it's okay

I do say it to E... Usually when I'm burping him and he let's out a huge one lol. He's been so gassy that it's a major accomplishment!

I say good job rather than good girl/boy.

I can't help but say it to my niece and nephew sometimes, but then I kinda cringe because it sounds exactly like what I say to my doggie... but it literally just slips out of my mouth!!

I try not to but I do still say it! I've never had a dog so it doesn't seem weird to me in that way but I do know that it is better to praise effort. Thanks for the reminder!

We say it to the dogs all the time, so I'm finding myself saying it to LO. To make matters worse, our dogs are female, so half the time "Good Girl" slips out when I'm talking to our son. Oops! He's gonna be all kinds of confused.

I think the easiest phrase for me to use instead of "good girl" is "good job" or "You did it".

The other phrase I want to be careful about using is "That's pretty". We were at the mall and she wanted to watch some women get their make up done and I caught myself telling her that they were "getting pretty". Of course they were pretty without make up too!

So what do you say instead???

Reading the question, I thought of
1. my dog
2. nurtureshock. That book had a profound impact on me.

However, that being said, since I do say it all the time to my dog, I feel like it's going to come out of my mouth without me even thinking about it.

I try not to say "good boy" but it does slip out. For the most part we say "good job" or "yay!!" and clap and cheer.

I just skimmed over Mr. Bee's post, but are there any other suggestions other than being specific to the task you're praising?

I'm so glad to see so many good comment about nurtureshock, I put that on my chritsmas list and REALLY hope I get it!

By the way those techniques work on the SO too geat ways to fill his bucket!

@Thehistoryofus: I'm struggling with the whole "pretty" concept for DD. I think her grandparents have been telling her she's so pretty, and now every time she wears a necklace or some outfit she likes, she says "oh, I'm going to be so pretty in this" and then if she doesn't like some clothing she says "but i'm not going to be pretty, mommy!" Ugh!

I say good boy now and then, but I find myself saying good job or just yay when DS does something new or funny. Sometimes I'll tell him he's a cool dude because it's so funny when he repeats it. He says hi to everyone, so I tell him often that he's such a nice and friendly boy.
