it always makes me twitch when my parents or in-laws say, "good boy!" to lil' CB for two reasons:

1. because it sounds like what you'd say to a dog and,

2. from my years of teaching and learning about how to talk to children, i stay away from that phrase because it qualifies the child as being "good" which also means he can then be "bad". instead, i try to focus on the action or the effort. yes, it might sound a little touchy-feely, but it's become so ingrained in me that i have to seriously bite my tongue when i hear someone say "good boy/girl"!
